Keep comments cool!
Both JP and I have been following with interest the discussions in the Comments section, particularly about the Takeshima/Dokto issue. In regard to this, JP found an article in the Korean press about the fishing agreement, which you can read here. It is brief and not comprehensive, but I thought the most interesting part was this:
Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Oh Keo-don made clear, “If we abrogate the Fisheries Agreement, our boats will no longer be able to fish in the Japanese EEZ, and it can bring about a collapse in near-sea fishing. We have fished 1.6 times more than the Japanese did in each other’s EEZs since the 1999 Fisheries Agreement came into effect.”
Also, JP and I discussed the issue of banning certain people from making comments. Both of us are strong believers in free speech, while agreeing with Hubert Humphrey that “the right to free speech does not include the right to be taken seriously”. Therefore, while encouraging people to state their views, we hope they refrain from statements that would make us start banning people from making comments. You know who you are.
