The LegendA pair of online game players in Shanghai got a bit carried away, resulting in one of them being carried away on a slab.

Qiu Chengwei, 41, stabbed competitor Zhu Caoyuan repeatedly in the chest after he was told Zhu had sold his “dragon sabre”, used in the popular online game, “Legend of Mir 3″, [the China Daily] said a Shanghai court was told on Tuesday.

“Legend of Mir 3″ features heroes and villains, sorcerers and warriors, many of whom wield enormous swords.

After Qiu and a friend jointly won a weapon, they lent it to Zhu who turned around and sold it 7,200 yuan (464 pounds). Qui went to the police, but they told him that theft of a virtual item was not protected under the law.

Despite Zhu’s promises to turn over the money to the pair, Qui became enraged and stabbed Zhu with a non-cyber type knife in the chest, killing him.

Is this the blog entry du jour? I’ve seen this on half the blogs I regularly visit today!

diamondback Said:

So what?

You think everyone should check with you before posting an article?

Jing Said:

Why are you so defensive? It’s not your blog. Besides, no insult was meant, it was just an amusing observation that a relatively minor story like this gets so much coverage.

diamondback Said:

Sorry, Jing!

My mistake!

Honya Babe Said:

“A relatively minor event”?

I guess we see it differently, but I think a murder committed over the theft of a “cyber sword” has profound philosophical implications. If one is so inclined.

Speaking of defensive, Jing, are you being defensive because the people in question are Chinese? Would your attitude have been any different if they had been, say, Brazilian?

Jing Said:

No, no it wouldn’t. It’s been on almost every single blog I frequent which is rather surprising. A exageration perhaps but its over at Marmot, Asia Pages, Peking Duck, here, and two or three others if I recall. I didn’t think anything short of a major diplomatic incident or war would gather so many people’s attention at once.

Toni Said:

Oh, it’s definitely not a “relatively minor event”. The whole point of this story is is that people who are too wrapped involved in their own little cyber world can forget about real life consequences. I mean, seriously- some poor guy gets stabbed over something that DOESN’T EXIST. He got stabbed over some stupid game, for heaven’s sake. It’s incidents like this that really tell hardcore gamers and geeks to STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER ONCE IN A WHILE AND GET A REAL LIFE! Meet real people! Talk to REAL LIVE GIRLS!

Honya Babe Said:

I almost wrote that it didn’t exist, Toni, but then I saw the other implications. It was something that existed in the minds of the killer and the person he killed. It was something that they had to perform a physical act to get. It was something that could be used. Its presence was eliminated by a physical act. Yet it was not tangible in the strict sense of the word.

Man, I feel like talking to a real live girl!
