Maybe the Americans are pulling out of Korea.
SEOUL (Reuters) – Armed, six-legged robots may one day work alongside man’s best friend on the southern side of the Korean DMZ.
South Korea will spend 33.4 billion won (18.2 million pounds) over the next five years to develop the robots for the heavily fortified demilitarised zone that divides the peninsula, the Communications Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
More here.
Were not leaving just yet, but the robots are being developed more so to shrink the ROK Army to lessen the amount of conscripted soldiers needed. Mandatory service is building issue here and the Koreans are looking at using robots to replace some of their conscripted soldiers. I don’t think it will work but I guess we will see.
September 27th, 2005 at 4:56 amIt won’t work, not yet. They’d be a good supplement at best, but substituting them for manpower on the ground is not a very good idea.. You can do that with recce aircraft and explosives disposal remotes, but not Army personnel in difficult terrain facing a numerically superior enemy. It’s like delusioning yourself to failure.
