You Too Can Be Otaku
09/30/2005 @ 3:00 am
The word otaku doesn’t have quite the same meaning among anime fans in America as it does in Japan, though even in Japan, with the success of shows like Densha Otoko, anti-otaku sentiment is changing.
Cruising the Anime City: An Otaku Guide to Neo Tokyo shows Westerners where to go and what to buy in Tokyo in order to fulfill the dream of being a real otaku.
With this book, you too can be a geek, Japanese style.
Believe it or not, cool otaku do exist – I’m living proof!
Thanks for the heads up Marie, sounds like something worth checking.
September 30th, 2005 at 9:54 amMarie, cool post. Thanks for heads up.
September 30th, 2005 at 11:54 amOne thing of note: Westerners should be capitalized in print, we don’t write asians or christians or the orient. It’s Asians, Christians, the Orient. White people and black people are lowercased, yes, and geeks never capitalized. Right on that one. But please change “westerners” to Westerners. You ”Westerners” often make this mistake.
And shouldn’t that be ”oitaku”?
September 30th, 2005 at 11:54 amIt’s definitely “otaku” and not “oitaku.” I suppose I can put “Westerners” in caps! I’m always forgetting if “South” should be capitalized or if “Winter” should be. Usually I guess incorrectly, I guess! And yes, there definitely are cool otaku.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:09 pm…and the title of the book says “Neo Tokyo”, not just Tokyo.
October 2nd, 2005 at 7:19 pm“cool otaku” is an oxymoron.
