Tsuyoshi Shinjo Update
As reported in an earlier Japundit post, certifiably “alien” Nippon Ham Fighters baseball star Tsuyoshi Shinjo spends his off-time out-of-uniform modelling underwear.
The Shinjo campaign is notable for being affiliated with the Japanese government’s “Warm Biz” energy saving initiative, and also for the life-size, beefy Shinjo manikins used to sell underwear in department stores.
GUNZE, who’s Wild Body line of underwear Shinjo touts, has really gotten into the goofy spirit of the ad campaign, and has recently started a blog that follows a life-sized Shinjo mannikin as it travels around Japan.
The blog is a whole lot of fun, and, if you can navigate the Japanese, is full of neat little easter eggs to discover.

Squid. Ink. Ice cream.
Now I’ve f***ing heard of everything. I have to try that…
November 15th, 2005 at 9:28 amNot only is there a maneki Shinjo but also a Romulan Shinjo.
November 15th, 2005 at 9:57 amThe other day I saw Shinjo on TV for the roll out of his new underwear design, for which he was some sort of advisor.
When one reporter asked Shinjo what he looked for in underpants, he replied something like, “Good design, good fit, and good “positioning” (”positioning” in English).
The mostly male reporters did not react and Shinjo kept saying “Positioning. Positioning. You know what I mean. Positioning.”

Seafood ice cream an unlikely hit in Taiwan
A Taiwan entrepreneur has found a recipe for success after expanding her menu to include a range of frozen desserts like strawberry tuna and wasabi cuttlefish
An employee of Liny Hsueh’s “Dr. Ice” shop prepares ice cream made of seafood in Keelung’s Bisha port in this Oct. 23 file photo. Salty, pungent seafood does not seem ideally suited to sweet and soft ice cream, yet Hsueh Hsueh has managed to find a harmony between the two to create the nation’s only seafood-flavored frozen desserts line.

Savoury ice cream has become a popular fad in trendy Western restaurants, but local vendor Liny Hsueh (薛麗妮) is whipping up business with an even stranger range of flavors — seafood.
Hsueh’s “Dr. Ice” brand offers ice cream, “snowflake ice” (shaved ice) and “bubble ice” (thinly shaved ice) made from shrimp, cuttlefish, tuna, seaweed and laver (purple seaweed) combined with fruits, mint, wasabi, peanut and wine.
Salty, pungent seafood does not seem ideally suited to traditionally sweet and soft ice cream, yet Hsueh has managed to find a harmony between the two to create the nation’s only seafood-flavored frozen desserts line.
