Chage & Aska

“Hello and welcome to a special edition of ‘Talk Asia’ from Tokyo,” says CNN reporter Lorraine Hahn based in Hong Kong. In this recent interview aired on CNN worldwide, Hahn gets up close and personal with the rock duo who have been a major influence on the Japanese music scene for 25 years with such hits as, yes, “Say Yes” and “Yah Yah Yah.”

Chage and Aska

Chage and Aska are their stage names, of course. Real names: Shuuji Shibata and Shigeaki Miyazaki.

Interviewer: Chage, Aska, you both have lots of international exposure over the years like Monaco music festivals for example. How important was it for you both as Japanese performance to break into American or even European markets?

Aska: I wonder how important it is. I guess we are in a situation where we might have to say that it is not that important! Ok yes, it us important, but as soon as we say that, we are not in the game. Do you know what I mean? It is most beautiful to be accepted into the international scene naturally. It is not smart to show your desperation to be accepted.

Chage:
Our handicap is that we, Chage and Aska, are more focused on lyrics than melody. And we sing in Japanese. In western counties, it is important to sing in English. But the world is getting smaller. If Asian baseball players can go to the U.S. and play well, maybe the same thing can happen for us in music. I could be wrong, but my instinct tells me it will happen.

One of those dudes never takes off his hat, is it because he is ashamed he is balding?

The world would be a better place if more people listened to Chage & Aska. I can’t understand that much Japanese yet, but Aska’s voice is just so amazing. If you really want to understand their songs, you don’t need to understand Japanese at all, you can just feel all of the emotion. I would hate it if they started singing in English. Japanese has so many beautiful sounds that simply can’t be made in English and Aska makes all of those sounds so much more intense with his distinctive voice.

Chageasu LOVE!

One tiny note: Miyazaki fans who want to own one of the rarest DVDs out there could do worse than to order the Short Short DVD, which is a collection of all the short film works Studio Ghibli has done over the years. The centerpiece is the music video by Chage & Aska that is in effect a complete visual masterpiece that’s as amazing as most of his films. We have it at J-List (standard disclaimers), see link at left. My kids love it. They also throw in the really cool Hayao Miyazaki-created House Foods TV commercials.

Duo Said:

Hm, sounds like something worth checking out. Thanks Peter.

For those wondering, the title of that music video done by Miyazaki is called “On Your Mark”.
