Lucky bag madness

One strange New Year’s custom in Japan is the crazy rush to buy “lucky bags” that are sold by major department stores.

People start lining up hours before the store opens and rush into the store as soon as the doors are unlocked.

They jostle and fight to buy a lucky back that contains. . . Well, no one really knows.

Each bag is sealed and you don’t know what is inside until you purchase it.

Yeh, what is that all about? can anybody on the ground there explain?

and why did Emperor praise those who died in WWII as having sacrificed to make Japan what it is today? Is HE THE GOD KING trying to say that those dummies who died in WWII were doing a good thing by fighting a fascist war against the free world? The EMP is crazy loon. Get rid of him soon!

Japan is going to the dogs. Sad.

What the F is he thinking of?

Emperor Akihito has marked the New Year with a message dedicated to the victims of World War II.

He becomes the first Japanese monarch to publicly honor foreigners who died in the fighting.

“Millions of Japanese people died in the war, and many foreigners were also victims,” Akihito said in a statement released by the Imperial Household Agency.

“We will never forget the people who lost their lives in the war, and bear in mind that the Japan of today is built on the sacrifice made by those many people,” he said.

They sacrificed their lives for the Pacific War effort against the Allies and he HONORS them?

The Imperial Quote

“Three million and one hundred thousand [3,100,000] Japanese people died in the last war and many foreigners were also victims,” the 72-year-old emperor said. “We will never forget the people who lost their lives in the war and bear in mind that the Japan of today is built on the sacrifice made by those many people.”

Japan Today Poster Said:

I’m trying to think he meant well, but what a dopey thing to say. The guy is seriously out of touch. You’d expect more from an emperor. Even Kanda Uno probably knows more than this about the war. Sheesh.

Japan deserves better heroes and that includes emperors.

I thought about it a little more. Actually, what the Emperor said is offensive. Imagine if you changed it to Germany, like this:

German Chancellor Schroeder reflected on the Nazis who died in World War II and stressed the importance of their sacrifice in his New Year’s message released Sunday by the German government.

“Eight million and one hundred thousand German Nazi soldiers died in the last war and many foreigners were also victims,” the 65-year-old Chancellor said. “We will never forget the Nazis who lost their lives in the war and bear in mind that the Germany of today is built on the sacrifice made by the Nazis.”

Ronin Said:

While no Angels the Imperial army was definately not akin to Nazi’s. Or would you prefer Japan acted like Germany and tried to cover up all mention of that part of thier history? Also it seems that he is praising both sides of the conflict in making Japan what it is today. At least thats what I got out of it, maybe it loses something in translation.

Plunge Said:

Ronin, really? So the atrocities committed, the millions killed, the nearly 250,000 / month dieing during the last year of the war, the ‘medical’ experiments on innocents, the rape of young women and the subsequent attempts to ignore it give them nothing in common with their allies in Europe?

As far as the Emperor’s comment, I’m not sure, will have to read more. He has always been a vocal opponent of Yasukuni and has refused to visit there because of the way it glorifies the militaristic past and ignores the attrocities.
