Sake-nog
I’ve been saddled with the flu for the past few weeks, and this has included a horrible and hacking dry cough. Fortunately, I have my mother’s wisdom to help me with my symptoms! Around the time I turned 20, she sprang her secret “sake-nog” cure for the flu. It includes:
>A small cup of sake (think large Japanese tea-cup)
>one egg
>1/2 tablespoon honey or syrup
Mix all these ingredients in a cup. Then, place the cup in a pot of water. Make sure the water is low enough so the cup is not completely submerged. Bring the water to a boil. Use chopsticks to stir the sake-egg-syrup concoction. This will form curds.
Pull out the cup (using a hot pad) and enjoy! I usually start drinking with a spoon, then move on to taking actual sips. I swear, I love this stuff much better than Nyquil.
Egg Nog is just weird X.X i don’t know why but i just simply can’t drink the stuff. I can eat eggs but theres something about drinking egg that is simply wrong.
January 23rd, 2006 at 12:22 amThat’s tamagozake, pure and simple. You can also use hot sake with black sugar (brown sugar back home), and fresh grated ginger for a cold remedy.
January 23rd, 2006 at 12:48 amThe Mrs. made hot lemon with sugar which did a good job on the nightly hacking from colds and allergies. She’s from the Hiroshima area. I wonder if we’ll get more recipes?
January 23rd, 2006 at 12:55 amI can agree with Tom about Egg Nog.
January 23rd, 2006 at 2:02 amRegular sake is fine for now.
Well, you can kind of think of it as a glorified chawanmushi, if it helps. But I do swear this concoction takes the edge off of a bad flu with a cough! I’ll look into more recipes.
January 23rd, 2006 at 3:40 amOh man, this stuff sounds pretty good. I wish it was possible to get hold of some cheap sake over here in Denmark…
January 23rd, 2006 at 4:30 amDamn…sounds nasty but I guess if it works it’s better than a vitamin C shot
January 23rd, 2006 at 6:40 amBom motivo para ficar gripado
Ser curado com Sake. Até lá, divirto-me com isto. Claudio…
January 23rd, 2006 at 8:32 amI’ve had hot umeshu while dealing with a cold. It helped me come down from it a lot faster. Anyone try?
January 23rd, 2006 at 10:23 amMarie,
That sounds wonderful. Could it be dubbed “Japanese Penicillin”?
January 23rd, 2006 at 12:25 pmYes, I’ve had hot umeshu too! My Mom sometimes puts some umeboshi in hers. I have to say, I like her concoction a little bit better.
Danny, I suppose it is like Japanese penicillin!
January 23rd, 2006 at 2:54 pmWell, Marie, let’s call it ”Japanese penicillin” then!
There’s Jewish penicillin (chicken soup), Chinese penicillin (ginger chicken soup with 7 spices), Korean penicillin (rice porridge concoction with tiny shrimp and kimchi), might as well make your tamagozake the new “Japanese penicillin” for the postmodern world….
January 23rd, 2006 at 3:40 pmI loved tamagozake. And then, the most important part is that after you finish it, you get under heavy futon quilts and sleep, and sweat, sweat, sweat the cold out. Works like a dream.
