Nagoya U hires perv prof
Often when some scandal occurs in Japan, we hear reports about how the perpetrator and/or his superior resigns or is fired from the post they currently hold. Though such an outcome might give Taro Q. Public a warm, fuzzy feeling of justice done, it often amounts to no more than window dressing, as those who lose their jobs often get a generous retirement payment and slip into another position, often within the same industry or even the same organization.
This is what seems to be happening in the case of Professor Kazuhide Uekusa. Remember him?
As we reported last April, Professor Uekusa was arrested for using a mirror to look up the skirts of young schoolgirls on a stairway, for which he was fined 500,000 yen and forced to forfeit his mirror. Once a noted economist and frequent guest on TV shows dealing with economic matters, Uekusa has maintained that he was carrying the mirror for emergency grooming sessions should he suddenly be called upon to appear on TV.
Following his conviction, Uekusa said he would not appeal but instead would prove his innocence outside of the court system.
Today we get word that Uekusa has been hired to teach at Nagoya University of Commerce and Business as a visiting professor.
“It’s a waste of talent if Mr. Uekusa’s skills go unused,” said an official of the graduate school of the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business.
We wonder precisely to which of Professor Uekusa’s talents the official is referring, and whether his compensation package includes a new looking glass.
Could you teace me?Taro Q.Public–what’ts that?
January 27th, 2006 at 10:01 pmThe man in the street. John Q Public. But Japanese.
January 27th, 2006 at 10:12 pmSeeing as you’re all thinking it, I’ll say it. Where’s that man’s chin? Was that also confiscated?
January 27th, 2006 at 10:15 pmI see!Thank you for teaching,overoften.
January 27th, 2006 at 11:34 pmDo his features look like a little strange or bizarre,to you?
I think those are the average ones for a Japanese.
that guy looks oddly familiar to our vice principal at the junior high
January 27th, 2006 at 11:43 pmWell only in so much as he has no chin and looks like a permanent Kancho victim.
January 27th, 2006 at 11:44 pmWell, again, sorry, but what does Kancho mean?My dictionary hasn’t any word like that.mentioning Victim ,is it kind of a torture or something else?
January 28th, 2006 at 12:12 amYeah. Kind of. Do a Google Image Search for ‘kancho’ – that should explain it.
January 28th, 2006 at 12:20 amSo, in your opinion, should this man be barred from gainful employment forevermore?
January 28th, 2006 at 12:35 amAs perversões de um economista japonês famoso
É sério. Leia a coisa toda aqui. Claudio…
January 28th, 2006 at 1:23 amI don’t think its a big deal. At least he had courtesy to use a mirror instead of looking directly. Or maybe I have been watching too many shows that portray the perverted but harmless old man. And I think his excuse was pretty good.
January 28th, 2006 at 4:23 amUnderstandable from the Uni’s point, hes clearly an intelligent man when it comes to business and if hes famous it may encourage the students.
January 28th, 2006 at 6:34 amStill i wonder what kind of contract they had to get him to sign lol.
”I hereby promise to have no mirror on me at any point when on campus”
I go to Nagoya University actually actually and since it went into private ownership they have started making some pretty unorthadox moves. Trying to run it more like a business than an institutution of higher learning. It’s weird the beautiful garden that they advertise in posters is not cut and in summer it grows really long, they are cutting back on certain language classes, my Portugues class was cancelled because the cirriculum had changed. It has the reputation of being the most prestigious university in the Chubu area but the moves they are making are putting that in jeprody.
I haven’t heard anything about the Uekusa hiring situation so its good to get that news. I’m not sure how newsworthy it is though. His reputation is tarnished making it a questionable decision for Nagoya University but he has worked his whole life in the field of economics, whats he going to do, bag groceries for the rest of his life?
January 30th, 2006 at 2:19 amWe will not be seeing him on TV anymore and he has probably had to make other big life changes besides TV work.
People in western countries are given a second chance after certain crimes and I don’t see why he shouldn’t be given the oppertunity to live his life in some way that his knowledge can be realised. If he screws up again he will have serious difficulties finding any work in another academic institution. If he makes the same stupid mistake again he’ll have to polish those grocery bagging skills.
Besides he is only a visiting professor for a short period of time. He doesn’t even have one regular class.
January 30th, 2006 at 2:22 am[...] Following his arrest in 2004 (for which he paid a 500,000 fine and forfeited his mirror), Uekusa was hired by Nagoya University, a spokesperson for which said, “It’s a waste of talent if Mr. Uekusa’s skills go unused.” [...]
