Hope for Manicures!

Hallelujah! After about a 6 month drought I think that there may be hope on the horizon for my Japanese manicure in the States. I mean, I’ve been reading Japion religiously looking for some hint as to where I might find a place that specializes in nairu, and I enlisted the help of my wonderful hairdresser to help me find such a place, but so far nothing, nothing, nothing. Just endless rows of American style designs that involve criss-crossy lines or Jackson Pollack-like splatter.

Then, today, I found this article, which proves that at least there is one Japanese manicurist around. Go ahead. Click on the link and see what kind of beauty your nails could be subjected to assuming you don’t have a job requiring that you actually use your nails. And then today, I got an email from a Japanese salon which seems to indicate they have the kind of service I am looking for. I’ll report back with results but I’m cautiously optimistic because the email told me how much it would cost per finger to have my nail art done. And that’s pretty much the way it works in Japan. You pay to have your nails all painted. And then you pay per finger for the designs.

Oh happy, happy day for this obssessed person . . .

NYC blows.

When I moved from California to New York a couple years ago, I noticed a lot of women in the NYC area had extravagent, loud manicures.

Most of them were totally tacky and I always associate those kind of nails with low-class ghetto chicks from the Bronx.

I don’t particularly think those nairu are very attractive. They are a little more creative than what I saw in NY when I was there. However, I always associate extravagent nail painting with low-class NY chicks.

NYC is supposed to be so “fashionable”. I was shocked at how tacky everybody was. It’s like they’re forever stuck in 1987.

Example: Every guy has the “Gotti kid” haircut, and every woman wears pink velour track pants with “Juicy” on the butt.

Ahhh, New York.

Where were you when you were hanging out with Gotti haircuts and Juicy couture track suits? Times Square? You know that’s not where the New Yorkers hang, I hope!

As for the nails, I’m not a big fan of most nail art in the US. But I do love what they do in Japan — which is why I keep trying to find a real Japanese manicurist!

“Where were you…Times Square?”–Marie

ha ha…Times Square was actually where I saw less of those “true NY fashions”, since everybody in Times Sq. seems to be a tourist.

The worst offenders are undoubtedly from Brooklyn, LI, Jersey, and Westchester. But I still saw Manhattan overrun by these yahoos. I’d say the only part of town where that 1987 NY style isn’t prevalent is in places like Chelsea, or the Village.

Marie, you HAVE to admit that every guy in NY has that damn haircut. It is the UGLIEST HAIRCUT I’VE EVER SEEN. The fade. The shaved area around the ears and super high neck-line. The tiny, 1-hair-width pointy Spock sideburns. It is so freakin gay.

One day I went to get a haircut at my usual barber. He was out sick and one of his other barbers gave me that haircut, to my surprise. I went home and shaved my head.

You know what, Geoff, they keep trying to tell me that the 80s are back again. I’m seeing more and more legwarmers and leggings around town. And the girls are wearing cone-shaped heels on their shoes . . .
