Japanese want improved relations with China
Though there are some who would have us believe that Japan is populated by robots whose minds have been thoroughly numbed by years of indoctrination with textbooks that whitewash the nation’s past, a recent government survey here suggests otherwise.
Nearly four-fifths of respondents to the survey agreed that Japan must improve relations with China.
Asked what specific problems were contributing to deteriorating relations with Beijing, nearly 59 percent of respondents raised differences over interpretations of wartime history, including Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s visits to a war shrine critics say glorifies Japan’s militaristic past.
Respondents also cited disputes over natural resources and China’s growing military spending as thorns in the troubled relationship.
Approximately 40 percent of the respondents said there is no problem with Japan’s security. Of these, 70 percent credited the nation’s mutual security treaty with the U.S., while 55 percent gave the credit to Japan’s constitution, which outlaws the use of force in settling international disputes.
But…but…

Because I discusssed chines and knew “All chinese are brain washed by communist.”
They support Infringement of human rights in Tibet&East turkistan&farmer.
卍=★ This is the real of china.
European see”China in capitalism will become democratic nation”
hahahahahha,it,s too funny.
Chinese can,t understand democracy for ever except they are shocked by something.
At least, capitalism is not the something.
Do you know the something?
At least,Japan need 3 generation to understand democracy.
But this is still not enough.
more and more time is needed to understand democracy after 1945.
Democracy washing by US government.
But I think even 100years is not enough for Japan.
And china,at least over 1000years is needed for them to understand democracy.
But it is shortest case.
After communizm,democracy will come・・・・
Really?
In china, after sino Yuan Shikai tried to become EMPEROR
So,Fasizm will come after communism.
Look and think and know
democracy is not perfect.

Hi Fluffy, I’ll give everyone an English version on your comment so you can get some feedback to your question:
Japan has maintained for many years that Takeshima and the Senkaku Islands are Japanese territory. The concept of courting Korea and China’s requests to put something in textbooks that has never been there before is strange. In contrast, Japan does not tell Korea or China how to write about the territorial issue or change the contents of their textbooks. Isn’t it normal for other countries not to interfere with a nation’s education system?
March 30th, 2006 at 11:56 pm“The concept of courting Korea and China’s requests to put something in textbooks that has never been there before is strange.”
Japan has been decentralizing it’s education system out of respect for educational freedom and to make it more competitive. Unfortunately thats a foreign concept to China and perhaps to Korea as well.
March 31st, 2006 at 7:09 amThank you for this article. It’s very helpful to show how the actions of the leaders of a country are often not completely reflecting the opinions and wishes of its people.

March 31st, 2006 at 10:37 amWow, big shocker, huh? Contrast that with the usual surveys that are given to the Chinese people in China. Not all of them of course, but their surveys always say that japan/japanese are reviving militarism, etc. etc. etc. I mean, they spout automatic nonsense, live in denial of their own past, and continue to engage in despicable racist attitudes and actions against japanese. And they justify their stupidity by crying louder about japan’s past wartime actions. I mean, just look at the nationalists that continue to come to this board (and will debate about how right they are and how bad japanese are on this thread alone).
Is anyone out there, besides japundit, ever going to tell the world what true reality is instead of the autopilot japan bashing and hating everyone engages in???
March 31st, 2006 at 12:32 pm“I mean, they spout automatic nonsense, live in denial of their own past, and continue to engage in despicable racist attitudes and actions”
are you referring to Japan or China?
“I mean, just look at the nationalists that continue to come to this board (and will debate about how right they are”
are you referring to those that favor Japan or China?

Anonymous, I would like for you to point out exactly who denies Japan did bad things in the past. The emperor, the prime minister, and other representatives of the Japanese government have issued apologies to victims of past Japanese aggression.
The Chinese government accepted apology, signed the Peace Treaty and agreed to the normalization of relations with Japan. However, many Chinese people don’t seem to know these facts because the propaganda machine spews out false claims.
In my experience, people in Hong Kong and Taiwan seemed to very friendly to the Japanese, and Japanese pop music, films, anime, fashion etc were all popular there. In contrast, a textbook rarely read in Japan stirred a mass hysteria and race-based violence against all things Japanese (including Chinese owners of them) in China. It just goes to show you the destructive effect of the paranoid nationalism in mainland China.
Remember China had accused teachers, merchants, priests or foreign educated people etc as the enemies of people’s China and over 20 million people were killed during the Cultural Revolution.
March 31st, 2006 at 8:27 pmTheir idea is simple black and white and they can’t accept individuality and difference.
several govt ministers over the years have played down japan’s wartime atrocities. there are too many instances to note here–it’s an easily researchable reality. I’ve also personally spoke to many a japanese person who seemed oddly dismissive of the above past actions. so, of course, within japan there is denial of its past. as there is in china, as there is in the u.s.a., etc. but not ONLY china.
April 1st, 2006 at 8:06 amHey Fluffy, well yah most of the conversation is in English. I think either should be fine but in reality not everyone can read both so people can’t join in an interesting conversation. Our last discussion was interesting but no one else joined in. I didn’t want to translate the whole thing, it would have taken a while. If you dont have time to write in English go ahead and write in Japanese and I might translate it again.
if I feel like it
April 1st, 2006 at 2:23 pmAnonymous, whatever political tendencies people have, Japan, as a nation, officially apologized to China.
The Chinese government has has never apologized for their invasion of Tibet, East Turkistan, Vietnam, South Korea, India, Chairman Mao’s atrocities during the Cultural revolution and its support of murderous Pol Pot clique. Japanese historians can write books highly critical of their government, and imperial Japan’s war time record. I want to know if you believe historians in China could print anything remotely different from the Chinese government’s position.

It won’t be enough until we trample people’s rights by banning them from going to Yasukuni, and waste taxpayers’ money by giving it to some bitter old people in other countries who wouldn’t appreciate it anyway! Even if all that does happen, I’ll just make up another complaint! I claim to love Japan despite my constant whining about everything it does and my incessant excuses for everything China and Korea do!
I figured somebody will come in here and post that tripe, so I decided to beat him to it.
April 2nd, 2006 at 4:06 amFluffy, I just wanna tell u that democracy, and despotism refering to ideology must base on the economic situation and development level of the country. German acted for war in last century so as to transfer the domestic conflction of economic and society, and Japan’s democracy would have never turned up if it still had military appeal and purposes.
April 5th, 2006 at 5:34 pmAs a Canadian-born Chinese person, I am often ashamed of how China handles things. -___- I do think both Japan AND China should make more efforts in improving international relations with each other. For nations with so much intertwined culture and history, they’re really drifting apart.
Yes, I agree. I have a lot more hope on China’s young people today; many of them seem to be very absorbed in Japanese pop culture and the like. It’s the older Chinese that are the most hostile. I know my friend’s dad does not allow her to buy manga because it is Japanese.
