Pulling it off
One of the things we like to do here at Japundit whenever possible, is to debunk some of the hoaxes about Japan that are making the round around the Internet. We have reported on see-through dresses, scanty swimsuits, and panty pulling – labeling all of them as hoaxes foisted upon a gullible global audience that is only too ready and willing to believe anything they hear about strange Japanese behavior.
But now we get word via Mainichi’s hallowed Wai-Wai pages that panty pulling may not be a hoax after all.
Large numbers of Japanese women are falling victim to teams of sneaky men who run up behind them, rip down their undies and then send footage of the attack throughout the world via the Internet, according to Shukan Jitsuwa (5/25).
“These movies of guys lifting up women’s skirts and even tearing down their panties are spreading everywhere. At first, I thought they were all set-ups, but the footage with the women shocked at what they’ve just been put through is actually all real,” a writer on Japan’s underground DVD market tells Shukan Jitsuwa.
“They’re all underground movies, so the faces and other parts you see are all real. And it’s the horrified reaction of these women that’s apparently the biggest turn-on for the perverts who are into this kind of thing. They’re really popular.”
Since this is a report from one of Japan’s weekly magazines that have a well-deserved reputation for spicing up the news to titillate their readers, it is still impossible to tell what is being pulled: the panties of victims or the legs of the magazine’s readers. Because of this, we are not ready to admit we miscalled this one just yet. However, the fact that panty pulling is being reported at all makes it possible that it actually may be going on somewhere.
I was actually going to e-mail about this but figured you would see it anyway. I think its kinda disturbing really, if i saw someone do it i would chase them down. I would say perhaps mainichi is overstating it a bit but it probably is going on, although its hardly as though 300 people is a lot.
May 12th, 2006 at 12:11 amAnd here I get castigated for reporting the same thing…gotta love the double standards of some as I know this person reads both of our sites.
May 12th, 2006 at 3:46 amBy this person you don’t mean me do you plunge? Because i have never even been to your site O.o;
May 12th, 2006 at 6:17 amWhat a bunch of punks. I agree with Plunge as far as punishing these fools. But I don’t think this is the coming of “moral decacy” in Japan and that this thing is taking the nation by storm. Doesn’t take anything more than a couple of guys posting their “episodes” on the net or selling their shitty homemade DVDs to the pervs (which are nothing new in Japan or anywhere).
May 12th, 2006 at 6:29 amI read both sites – and to me it just looks like a kind of clumsy form of zenra( 全裸 )or pre -zenra.
May 12th, 2006 at 6:54 am“However, the fact that panty pulling is being reported at all makes it possible that it actually may be going on somewhere.”
Or WILL be, once people start “copycatting” the stories they’ve heard.
And it bothers me the way stories that happen in Japan, or anywhere, are reported and people react saying how terrible a particular country and its citizens are, when the story involves a small number of people, and similar and worse things happen everywhere.
May 12th, 2006 at 7:19 am“Sharking (or “panty pulling”) involves running up to a random girl, lifting up her skirt, and pulling her panties down past her knees.”..Sharking(?)does this imply that the remora’s are also involved. If so-how?? (Any clues out there??.Happy slapping to you all!!)

Japan’s Morals Continue to Decay at the Expense o
UPDATE: Wow, twice in a week. Japundit and I report on the same thing, except that I get castigated for reporting it and he doesn’t….hmmm…
May 12th, 2006 at 7:40 am“I report on the same thing, except that I get castigated for reporting it and he doesn’t….hmmm…”
Maybe that’s because JP simply reports it, while you use it as a basis to support your regular anti-Japanese screed. Example:
JP – Korean Man Stubs Toe in Shinjuku, Requires Amputation
Plunge – Japanese Still Dismembering Koreans, as Usual
The reader already knows what you have to say, while JP sometimes surprises us.
I still doubt that this is particularly common. If some guys with a video camera are doing this to unsuspecting women, it won’t be for long.
And WaiWai’s reporting is always suspect. I find it very hard to believe that a writer specializing in underground porn vids would refer so easily to the people he specializes in as “perverts” who are “apparently” turned on by something. Wai Wai, on the other hand, routinely labels their subjects as perverts, lest we start to suspect that WaiWai is, god-forbid, being lurid.
I complained to one of the translator/writers for WaiWai about an article where they are graciously welcomed into a private club, and and repay their hosts, who are harming nobody, by calling them perverts in the title. He returned my e-mail saying that the headline writers inserted that on their own.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the anonymous (red flag alert there) writer was misquoted, or simply doesn’t exist.
May 12th, 2006 at 8:42 amOh please, give me a freakin break. The problem is that certain right-wing-japan-loving-japan-can-do-no-wrong bloggers and blog readers can’t handle a post that says anything other than Japan is perfect. A perfect example is your disingenuous characterization of my blog and what it is about. Keep it up though. I’m sure your puppet masters are pleased.
May 12th, 2006 at 10:25 amI like to write up things like this because they are funny and interesting, and highlight strange things that people do. The setting for these stories here is always Japan, because this is a Japan blog.
There are plenty of other stories that I run across each day that I don’t write up, because they involve other countries. A recent story I really wanted to do was one I would have titled, Who says no blood for oil? But since there was no Japan angle, I didn’t.
As far as the the suggestion that the Japanese possess some kind of unique inbred predilection for fetishistic behavior, think again.
May 12th, 2006 at 11:25 am“Oh please, give me a freakin break. The problem is that certain right-wing-japan-loving-japan-can-do-no-wrong bloggers…”
Any chance you had at getting a break ended right there.
May 12th, 2006 at 12:52 pmAmpontan, why? You don’t think there are bloggers like that out there? I think it describes some of those that blog about Japan perfectly, and it is the only term I can use since I was censured for using Japnophile. If the term doesn’t describe you, it shouldn’t bother you.
May 12th, 2006 at 1:23 pmYou know, sometimes, I think to myself that Japan has become so fundamental to our blogging that if Japan didn’t exist, we Korea bloggers would have to create it.
May 12th, 2006 at 2:10 pmNow who’s hijacked a perfectly harmless and humour filled debate about panty-pullers/Sharkerz ??? Any clues???
May 12th, 2006 at 2:20 pmI’ve seen the DVD’s for sale in several shops in Tokyo; they are hardly underground. They keep making more and more videos in the series. I have found about 5 of them, including the tank-top pulling and ’surprise ejaculation’, on bit torrent sites. The videos certainly exist, and they certainly do what the article describes in various public places. I have to call bullshit on the article, though, since the fact that the DVD’s producers have a corporate website and market their videos to major stores. Either these underground DVD’s are staged(the girls are paid to look like they are getting attacked), or the Japanese authorities don’t give a sh#t about going after criminals who advertise and profit off of their crimes.
May 12th, 2006 at 6:09 pmThat article is bull. ガセネタですよ。ほんとうにこんなことを素人の女性たちがされたら、今頃ニュースになって警察も動いてますって。
May 12th, 2006 at 6:18 pmI agree, Fluffy. It is predcisely for the reasons you give that I concluded this was a hoax in the first place.
May 12th, 2006 at 6:26 pmSo Fluffy, what is it? Amateurs?(your term)or a clever conspiracy involving the local police. The reason I ask is because you led me way off-centre on the Yasukuni issue.
May 12th, 2006 at 6:35 pmremora
Girls that appear in those videos are not amateurs. They get paid money for it.
May 12th, 2006 at 7:06 pmFluffy,
May 12th, 2006 at 7:45 pmI earlier made this point:- “I read both sites – and to me it just looks like a kind of clumsy form of zenra( 全裸 )or pre -zenra”
So, as both know, Zenra/AV stars..whatever..it’s all basically about money. The only reservation I had was that you were directly implying that the the police were also “on the payroll” (so to speak)- that’s a pretty strong accusation -or is that “common knowledge as well.I’m always willing to learn.-Have a nice weekend/Catch you Monday!!
[...] People on Japundit where Plunge commented were also questioning his ideas concerning the article. Plunge responded to his critics on Japundit in this way – Oh please, give me a freakin break. [...]
October 5th, 2006 at 11:23 amMatt of Occidentalism, quit spinning. If you’re gonna say what Plunge said, say EVERYTHING he said and what EVERYONE had said to him rather than make select references and quotes, you deceptive spinner. After all, you use your own site to present Koreans in the worst light possible even if it means spreading lies or writing about a FEW bad apples in Korea. Plus, you ARE a pervert yourself, Matt, based on your postings of 9 year-old girls.
October 7th, 2006 at 1:42 amBTW, Japan is noted even here in the West for its moral decay.
October 7th, 2006 at 1:43 amMore info on Gerry Bevers’ “reliable” source, Bruce Cumings.
October 7th, 2006 at 2:00 amBTW, Japan is noted even here in the West for its moral decay.
Try this on for size: “BTW, the West is noted even here in the Middle East for its moral decay.”
That means what, exactly? That the West is in decay, or that the Middle Easterners have skewed opinions?
The West is mostly ignorant about Japan. Yet what little they know is, you seem to be saying, about Japanese sexual fetishes. That says far more about the West than it does about Japan.
October 7th, 2006 at 7:40 pmYeah, there are stereotypes of countries everywhere, some false, some true. Australia is stereotyped to be land of the beer-drinking but cheerful former convicts. Canada is stereotyped as having liberal people saying “eh?” Korea is known for having (sometimes overly) emotional people and (sometimes overly) spicy food. Japan is known for being a rich industrial country…..with too much disturbing fascination with underage schoolgirls and kinky sex practices.
Perhaps some of these stereotypes are right, some wrong. But these perceptions do exist. As for the moral decay in Japan, I have had Japanese living here in America say to me (I swear it was their words) that the Japanese are the biggest perverts and sex maniacs around. I knew they were kind of saying it tongue-in-cheek, but one guy in particular did seem kind of proud of his conquests….in America. More power to him.
October 8th, 2006 at 3:00 am[...] a random girl, lifting up her skirt, … Plunge – Japanese Still Dismembering Koreans, as Usual …http://japundit.com/archives/2006/05/12/2469/Japanese Panty Pulling Archive – eBaum’s World ForumArchive Japanese panty Pulling Video Clips … [...]
June 8th, 2008 at 2:16 pmIt’s been done in Europe too. Personally I find American women so up themselves that I love to see it happen to them. The technique clearly needs practice though, and the Japanese seem to have the lead in this field.
Regarding the morality of it, I think it’s OK so long as brute force isn’t used. The womans panties should be down around her ankles before she knows whats happened, and the ‘Shark’ should be running for the hills before a fightbreaks out.
March 16th, 2009 at 3:01 amJust wondering what the Japanese call pantsing or sharking
