A man who calls himself The Captain says he gave up on Japanese AV many years ago, but in this report, with reporting also by Albert Stovall in Tokyo, the Captain explains a few things about the porn business in Japan and how some directors go about their daily chores. [NSFW]
“Our productions are for masturbation,” says AV director Masao Tanaka. While female AV actresses can earn between 200,000 yen and 4,000,000 yen per feature, a top male actor might get only 60,000 yen a day. Guys who simply can’t get the timing right can see their pay sag to 15,000 yen.

That’s no different than in the US. The audience for theses videos (99% men I would assume) don’t want to see dudes. Plus, I’m sure there are plenty of willing men to be in videos, so payment is an easy reflection of supply and demand.

Something about Japanese culture or media is making a lot of Japanese men kimoi/creepy. This isn’t helping their declining population issue at all! Fix this problem of kimoi Japanese men, and the population problem is solved.
July 19th, 2006 at 11:21 pmcloneofsnake: While I admit that a lot of Japanese men are decidedly creepy, I think part of the population problem in Japan has to be blamed on the fact that so many young women prefer their men to be made of plasticine skin, with nary a body or facial hair, neoprene hairstyles, starvation level body weight, and a gender that defies identification (is it a man, a woman, or SOMETHING ELSE?!?!?!). I refer you to pretty much every manga/anime aimed at the female target audience and the famous (infamous?) Johnny’s Jimusho/Johnny’s JR. bevy of talentless “talents.”
Put this trend together with the AV videos with “darker and immoral themes” and you’ll have droves of people staying away from each other for sure
July 20th, 2006 at 10:03 amDudes get as little as 15,000 Yen a day? Shit, I made 10,000 as an extra in Baruto no gakuen (in theatres now) and I didn’t have to do any lifting. Then again, I suspect AV actors aren’t in it for the money…it’s the art. ^_^
