Well. . . Since 1977, at least.

And a lot longer if you understand “foreign manager” to mean one without Japanese parents.

How long ago was it “unthinkable”? Wally Yonamine (an American) was manager for the Chunichi Dragons from 1972 to 1977.

Last I checked, the Hiroshima Carp manager was from the States as well. Makes some sense to me, since every team seems to have a couple foriegn players, why not a manager? So long as the perception exists that MLB is a higher-status playing field, the managers should be just as desirable as the players.

I’d love to see Sadaharu Oh come to the States and manage though. That would totally ruin that obnoxious segment during the game where the manager has to talk to the play-by-play guys DURING THE GAME.
