Canned coffee in the a.m.

Tommy Lee JonesCanned coffee is very popular in Japan and it’s hard to watch TV for any time without seeing a commercial that ends in a salaryman or two gulping down a shot of brew from a can (complete with gulping sound effects).

How popular?

The folks over at What Japan Thinks say that over half of Japanese men start their workday with a can of coffee.

I did and I’m not even Japanese. Speaking of, yesterday, I wasn’t paying attention and I ended up with diet coffee. Yes, diet.

Not really sure how collagen makes coffee ‘diet’ other than slightly nauseating.

And, yes, that is Tommy Lee’s kowaii face.

I hate canned coffee. YUCK!

I’m a bit of a coffee snob, Dan. I like fresh brewed coffee from ground beans to sit and sip and wake up slowly with.
But canned coffee is great if you’re on the go early on a misty morning. And most importantly, if you never consider it coffee.
Having said that, some of them are so ropey I wouldn’t let my cat near them.

Of course, I also prefer fresh-brewed to canned coffee, but sometimes make do with canned in a pinch.

I once drank unsweetened coffee from a can and almost spit it out it was so horrible tasting. Sometime after that, I had the same unsweetened coffee that had been poured from the can into a cup and it tasted passable.

Since then, I have always wondered what it is about the steel can that makes unsweetened canned coffee taste so bad.

Anybody know?

Well, plenty of good coffee is made in aluminum coffee pots, so I would guess that bad taste is actually the coffee.

Or the metal might be creating a subtle electrical charge as you drink from it. Any silver dental work?

Danny Bloom Said:

Yeh, nothing like fresh brewed DIY home coffee to wake up with. What I hate about canned coffee is how much sugar is added. It’s really sugar water with coffee flavor, very little real caffeine there. But yes, it does the trick in the morning, and therefore the huge sales success these canned drinks enjoy worldwide. But count me out when it comes to canned coffee.

ghoti Said:

Danny, I agree. I used to keep an automatic coffee maker in lieu of an alarm clock next to my bed. Nice way to wake up.

I really think the sugar is there because the coffee tastes horrible without it (See JP above). The canned stuff is kinda nice to hold in your pocket unopened on a freezing day, though.

JP Said:

I also used to have an automatic coffee maker with bean grinder. The sound of the grinder would wake me up initially, then there would be a few more moments of light dozing until the fragrance of the finished coffee coaxed me the rest of the way from my slumber. . . It made waking up in the morning a pleasure!

Dittos on the hot can of coffee in the pocket on a cold day.
