Space problems

A writer probing the problems of too many people crowding too little space in the future, Frosty Woolridge, tells readers his take on Japan here:
To give you an idea where we’re headed, while in Japan, I watched baseball games. They endure so little space; they construct four ball diamonds in a box of land all facing inward toward each other. All the outfielders mingle with outfielders from four other teams. You can’t believe it unless you see it. What benefit has overpopulation given the Japanese?
Four baseball diamonds in one large field. Where? Photo?
Maybe he saw high school teams practice or something and not a real game.
February 12th, 2007 at 12:11 pmAnother “population bomb” scare? Sheesh. these guys never stop. Doom n’ gloom all the time, every time.
He should be talking about how well the Japanese manage to live in conditions that would make most people freak out. The four baseball diamond arrangement. Sounds like a good idea in an area where space is precious. I do agree with Mr. Bloom though: screenshot or it doesn’t count.
It’s an interesting facet of our civilization; those who live in comfortable and easy conditions spend more time thinking about how bad life is (or can be) versus those who actually live less comfortably and don’t have a ton of time on their hands. Idle hands do the devil’s work perhaps?
Gloomy people annoy me. /shrug
February 12th, 2007 at 1:16 pmWhat many in the West are often unaware of is that outside of the major population centers in Japan, it isn’t all that difficult to find yourself in a place that looks like it could easily accommodate a sizable increase in population. In some cases (such as Shiga), the entire prefecture is one large Japanese-style suburban sprawl in progress.
February 12th, 2007 at 5:02 pmThe linked article was just a rant. America is filled with wide open spaces, but he complains about the lines at Yellowstone. And, and Ryo said, there’s even a fair bit of space in Japan, which is far from the most crowded country in the world.
February 12th, 2007 at 8:32 pmI’ve NEVER once seen two baseball diamonds connected let alone 4. Even in Setagaya (my home town). I’ve only ever seen one at a time.
And it wasn’t that crowded at that.

Danny, how on Earth did you read enough of that crap to get to the comment about the Japanese baseball diamonds?
Nothing he says about Hurrican Katrina is correct. Winds never got to 200 mph, they did not know where it was going to hit 10 days ahead of time, my own mother and sister evacuated two days before landfall.
And the Sri Lanka tsumani happen 2 years ago, not last year.
So if we have a moratorium on immigration we won’t have to live the hellish existence of the Japanese? What with all their baseball playing immigrants?
