The United States government has not paid the rent on the land its embassy occupies in Tokyo since 1998.
The United States used to pay an annual rent of 2.5 million yen for the lease of 13,000 square meters state-owned land on which the U.S. Embassy is built in the upscale Akasaka district of Minato Ward, according to the ministry.
The government proposed raising the rent–which in 1997 came to about 200 yen per square meter–starting in 1998, but Washington did not agree to the price increase and stopped paying the rent, ministry officials said.
Hahaahhahaha
I wonder how Japanese debt collectors are able to collect loans from delinquent debtors and businesses
March 20th, 2007 at 12:29 amI like this: The government proposed raising the rent–which in 1997 came to about 200 yen per square meter–starting in 1998, but Washington did not agree to the price increase and stopped paying the rent, ministry officials said.
Hey, that’s a great idea! The next time my landlord raises the rent, I’ll just stop paying.
March 20th, 2007 at 2:55 amHa! That’s what you get for renting to gaijin.
March 20th, 2007 at 3:18 amHahaha! It’s funny. Nothing much has changed since Perry landed. Americans were going by their own rules then with unequal treaties then, and still playing by their own rules with military who don’t answer to Japanese law.
Only Americans could get away with something like this.

March 20th, 2007 at 9:51 amActually, Tantan, this sort of thing is not uncommon in the diplomatic world. Look at all the trouble New York City has had trying to get the various UN delegations there to pay fines for parking/traffic violations.
Yeah, use the UN as an example!
Who hasn’t paid UN dues for years? Who owes the most currently?
March 20th, 2007 at 10:48 amI was under the impression that embassy premises technically constituted a part of the territory of the state whose embassy is situated on the land in question. I was unaware that such land can also be leased.
March 20th, 2007 at 11:04 amI will someone would rent me something in the heart of Tokyo for 200 yen a square meter!
March 20th, 2007 at 11:16 amMike Oxlong – I think the failure to pay membership dues in an organization, and the refusal to pay for things such as rent for land and fines for parking violations constitute separtate and unrelated issues.
March 20th, 2007 at 2:02 pmDo you think the diplomats hide under there desks when the landlord comes?
March 20th, 2007 at 2:06 pmI wonder if they are paying their NHK fees. . .
