Taro Aso: Doing what Americans can’t…
03/22/2007 @ 10:00 pm
The very outspoken Foreign Minister of Japan gave a speech yesterday in Singapore about why the Japanese were better suited for diplomacy in the Middle East then American or Europeans.
Japanese are trusted. If (you have) blue eyes and blond hair, it’s probably no good. Japan is doing what Americans can’t do. Luckily, we Japanese have yellow faces.
Is it true? Can they do it better then Americans? What Aso seems to be suggesting is that if the world wants peace in the middle east, then we ought to leave it to ‘yellow faced’ people. So do what you think?
The full article can be read HERE.
So odd that he’d say it twice, too.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:53 pmAlthough it’s true Asians don’t have that much bad history with the Middle East, I don’t think it’s as simple as to say that all caucasians are not trusted. Though maybe Japanese diplomats will have an easier time of it in the future when it comes to negotiating in places like the Middle East then.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:51 pmHe also said recently…
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:06 amAs soon as he made this comment, Japanese began to be distrusted….
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:33 am“He also drew criticism in 2001 when, as economics minister, he said he hoped to make Japan the kind of country where “rich Jews” would want to live.”
Aryan-bashing and stereotyping Jewish people is not the way to go for a Foreign Minister. It’s no wonder people are starting to develop negative views on Japan and why some Japanese complain of being misrepresented by the government
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:40 amOOps sorry for the double-quote!! Problem fixed!!
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:40 am[...] [Japundit’s take here] [...]
March 23rd, 2007 at 2:29 amDon’t even get him started on the green eyed redheads.
March 23rd, 2007 at 3:09 amWith such generous material being provided by Japanese politicians, someone is missing out on a great commercialization opportunity here. So, who’s going to put together the Japan edition of the “365 Stupidest Things Ever Said” page-a-day calendar?
March 23rd, 2007 at 3:17 amI actually see what Aso is trying to say. And in a way he does have a point. The Americans do have some difficulty in the diplomatic world when it comes to the middle east mostly because of the thick disdain for its countries leaders. I think its fair to say Mrs. Rice also falls into that category.
The Japanese do have, from everything that I have seen, a good relation with middle eastern business particularly the oil companies. So I do know where Aso is going with this. He has a sense of humor that can be lost of many or at the very least he has a way of speaking that is unique.
So I don’t fault him for these comments because what he is saying has merit in a way… I just think he could have done it much much better!
March 23rd, 2007 at 3:39 amAso isn’t exactly wrong. Japan has very good relations with Iran and just about every other country in the middle east.
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:02 amIt doesn’t matter what he’s saying. Diplomacy is all about the way you say it. And bless him, he doesn’t appear to have realised that or got the hang of it.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:29 amThere is one point where he is is just flat out wrong. He’s basically saying Americans are all white with blue eyes and blonde hair. The idea isn’t even remotely accurate. Wouldn’t Japan be at a disadvantage in this regard? Yeah they could send “yellow face men” but last time I checked the US coudld send men of just about any shade. It would be a lot easier for the US to come up with an Arab, or Korean diplomat then Japan. If you ask me the only obsticle to diplomacy is the current administration.
March 23rd, 2007 at 8:17 amMiddle Easterners trust Japan because their international pussies who are willing to let stuff like humans rights and vowing the destruction of Israel slide as long as they can get their fucking oil from Iran. It has nothing to do with the color of one’s skin or eyes, but rather it has everything to do with Japan being a large consumer of natural gas which doesn’t carry with it the baggage of trying to colonialize this part of the world (like Europe), or supporting an enemy of the region’s religion.
It’s just like the US is with the Sauds. They don’t trust us because we’re not a bunch of slant eyed gooks (like racists like Aso would have you believe), but because we buy their oil and because we’re willing to support their regime despite the fact that they cut off peoples hands, ban their people from having freedom of religion, and arrest and stone to death women who were raped (instead of doing the same to the rapists).
What really strikes me is the pass that Japanese politicians like Aso get on racism both in the Japanese media and international media alike. If a white politician suggested that the reason America is generally seen in a more positive light in Korea than the Japanese was because we weren’t a bunch of tan skinned, brown eyed, small dicked, serial rapists; they would be crucified in the media. Why is it that just because this guy is Japanese, he gets it to imply that trustworthiness is a function of physical characteristics?
Aso reminds me of Kenneth Eng in Frisco, they’re both people who judge entire races by their worst representatives at best, racist pieces of shit at worst.

The difference between the homes of the “blue eyed, white eyed, gaijin” and Japan is that here in the US we recognize people like Kenneth Eng and Aso as the embarrassments they are and dismiss them to the fringes of society where they belong. In Japan, they become diplomats.
End rant
March 23rd, 2007 at 8:50 amNo, he’s not wrong but Aso said it in a very idiotic way
March 23rd, 2007 at 9:01 amIn any country of the world, a politician would end in hot water for saying such a stupid thing.
But not in Japan.
March 23rd, 2007 at 9:43 am“In any country of the world, a politician would end in hot water for saying such a stupid thing.”
I see your point but I reckon that much of the world is not as politically correct as you might believe. (I am using the term “politically correct” in a neutral sense in this case and not in a disparaging sense.)
March 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 ammasterful tlxtftrf. pure gold. I salute you.
March 23rd, 2007 at 10:11 am“He also drew criticism in 2001 when, as economics minister, he said he hoped to make Japan the kind of country where “rich Jews” would want to live.”
Jewish or not, if the people running Japan want rich people living there, they need to lower taxes. When including federal, municipal, and prefectural taxes, some Japanese people are losing half of their income to taxes. Japan also has the highest corporate income tax in the developed world.
Also, somebody should inform Aso that most Americans have brown eyes and dark hair, and that many Japanese people hardly look Asian.
March 23rd, 2007 at 1:41 pmHe doesn’t look very yellow to me (I never got that) , but I actually am brown and an American to boot.
March 23rd, 2007 at 3:03 pmI doubt very much that Mr. Tact will do very well as a diplomat as he seems to think but it’ll be funny (then tragic then probably funny again) to watch him try.
Raj: “Although it’s true Asians don’t have that much bad history with the Middle East…”
The mongols called. It seems they disagree with you.
