Kago Ai has been fired from Hello! Project

Ai

You may start seeing banner images such as the one above spread across the web like wildfire. Morning Musume fans across the world and JPop enthusiasts are up in arms over the recent and sudden termination of Kago Ai’s contract effectively kicking her out of the hugely popular Hello! Project.

The story is that Kago san had been caught smoking a cigarette in a hotel with her millionaire boyfriend who is about 18 years her elder. The problem is that Kago is 19 years old and the official smoking age in Japan is 20. On the surface this wouldn’t be a huge issue except that The Hello! Project is very strict when it comes to the images of its members. And this is not the first time Kago san has had a run in with this problem.

Two years ago Kago was kicked out of the band at 16 for one year because of a smoking offense.

I checked Yahoo News Japan where its a leading story on its front page. You can see it here. The site confirms that she has been fired and Kago admitted her contract has been terminated! Then the agency released this statement:

To Whom it may be Concerned;

Regarding the magazine article released on March 26th about Kago Ai, we have talked to Kago and unfortunately have verified it as true.

The incident regarding smoking that happened one year ago happened at a time when Kago was 17 and we still saw potential in her. We decided thus to have her go back to live with her parents for an unspecified length of time. After one year of reflecting over what had happened, we talked with her again and decided to give her a chance to come back. From January 23rd she returned to Tokyo and was doing office related work at the agency. She showed a strong work ethic over two months but now a second incident has occured and we have thus decided to give up on her comeback. Because she is still a minor we have talked with her family and decided it would be best to dissolve her contract.

We are very sorry that this incident has occured and must take responsibility as management.

From now on, especially with regard to celebrities who are minors, we must have a higher sense of responsibility and reinforce educational measures.

Is this the end of her musical career? My friends and my wife seem to think so. But that has not stopped internet users voicing their opinions in trying to bring her back.

So when are 2ch users going to start stalking and threatening UFA management?

James Said:

She was caught smoking about a year ago and suspended, I think. By doing it again she’s getting what she asked for. Maybe another agency will pick her up?

nikoniko – if for nothing else,fill-yourself-in-on the history/perils that 2ちゃんねる went thru to be what(?)it is at present.

If she has any talent, which she’s shown to have some screen presence. She’ll make it back on TV.

If not, one nude photo book later and she’ll extend her career for a few more years.

In a sense it is refreshing to see that somewhere in the world there are music agents that aren’t manipulative creeps. In the US they probably would have covered up this mess and continued to let the girl do pretty much whatever she wanted as long as she sold records. By the age of 25 she’d be another version of Britney Spears.

In another sense, this could be the perfect opportunity for Ai. She could cultivate the bad girl persona. Take advantage of the graying society to become the “grandpa whore” for salarymen, and create a larger following than the Hello! Project. Then grow older and by the age of 25 be a successful, married, attractive, vindictive woman like Christina Aguilera.

A couple a points to clarify:

First in February of 2006, she was caught smoking (and was underage at the time) by the tabloid Friday. She was put on indefinite suspension.

Last month Friday saw her again in Tokyo and interviewed her (with her Up Front’s permission, no less). We found out that she most of the year in her hometown of Nara. At the beginning of this year she moved back to Tokyo to ‘start over’ with the agency by doing stuff like office work.

This weekend it was revealed that she went into a hotel with a much older man, and was smoking.

So, she was given a second chance, knew the press was watching her, and still she blew it. Obviously being an idol wasn’t high on her priorities anymore.

The sad part of this is that she was part of a singing duo with Tsuji Nozomi. Kago’s actions have now pretty much destroyed any kind of singing career for Tsuji, who has now become a talento.

[Apologies in advance for some serious off-topicness. I didn't anticipate that someone would interpret my quip above as an ignorant attack on precious freedoms.]

remora – I’m quite familiar with 2ちゃんねる. Besides learning all the Japanese slang I know there, I also used to post quite a bit of AA, some of which still shows up in sigs around the net. I don’t need to read its history, since I’ve witnessed it from the beginning.

Just how have I come out against free speech? For goodness’ sake, in another thread here I spoke in defense of Gov. Ishihara’s ridiculousness, as I think he has a right (maybe even a public responsibility) to say stupid things. Sheesh… I even have a PC set up as a free proxy server so that people who don’t have a protected right to free speech can express themselves anonymously. Have you ever heard of the Peacefire project?

But when threats cross over into real-life stalking, that’s something else entirely. Especially when those people are trying to take away someone else’s right to free speech. Those are your chicoms — the ones who set a very dangerous precedent when they succeeded in silencing someone they disagree with.

only a few kagotards will be displaying “support” banners. ahaha. support what? support kago having an affair with a guy older than her dad and throwing her career away? lol

she made these bad choices, it’s silly to get upset with ufa over this. it’s pretty clear that she doesn’t care to be in the entertainment industry anymore. best of luck, but i can’t help thinking she’ll get dumped in a few months when that old bastard finds a younger woman.

es Said:

Damn, you can throw away your career by smoking a cigarette when you are 19? Thats like being on probabtion.

alexpappas Said:

To be fair, I don’t think it was an affair. I think the guy is her legitimate boyfriend even though he’s much older.

RTN Said:

I could care less if she’s been fired or not for doing something illegal. The Hello! Project has a right to enforce conduct standards contained in the contracts of its employees–especially when its selling image, rather than talent, as product. I think Alex raised a very interesting question. Can she work again in Japanese entertainment?

The talent agencies control everything so strictly, that she might literally be black listed and never work again. It’s the same way that no one ever investigates or says anything bad ever about Johnny’s (sp?) talents. If they do, they’ll never be given access to the Johnny’s stable of entertainers again.

If she can work again in entertainment, selling herself as an early Britney Spears type pseudo “Bad Girl” would work very well (sexual, yet innocent)–getting fired for smoking (bad, but not too bad) and liking older men would work very well.

Kago was not kicked out of Morning Musume for smoking. She graduated from the group two years prior to the first smoking incident a year ago (and she was 17 at the time the pictures were taken anad 18 at the time they were released). She was “suspended” from her new group, W, for a year and her comeback was in the works when this latest incident occurred.

As you stated, Hello!Project is very strict when it comes tot he imaages of its members. This latest incident is not so much about her smoking again (the reporter who made this accusation had no photographic evidence to prove this) but about the fact that she has a boyfriend. H!P girls are effectively forbidden from fraternizing with the opposite sex (a different member of Morning Musume resigned after the magazine Friday, which also broke Kago’s smoking scandal, published pictures of her and her boyfriend).

Kago was photographed taking a trip to a hot springs resort with this older man and spending the night with him in one hotel room. Upon confrontation with reporters, the man lied and said that he and Kago were cousins and that they had been attending a family function. The man is also allegedly married.

alexpappas Said:

lilah, I was careful to make the distinction between the pop group and the Hello Project in the article. But I appreciate your post. I did not know the man she was seen with is allegedly married though… This is interesting…

That certainly does require addition research if anyone is curious…
