Japan culture and sex. The great misunderstanding.

I came across a video today and although produced by the BBC, I was quite intrigued at the point of view they took when they looked at the culture of sex in Japan.
Point in question: This video. The only part I strongly disagree with is the mention that when business men hangout after work that its usually at a sex oriented establishment. Something that is not at all true in my experience. But that is precisely the point isn’t it? We gaijin are just always a little out of the loop. And even living in Japan doesn’t mean we understand it.
Meaning… you’d normally dismiss anything they produce?
April 12th, 2007 at 4:14 pmNo, you’re right Alex. Maybe the BBC crew spent their nights at sex establishments and just assumed Japanese do the same. Unless they consider a hostess bar a sex oriented establishment. It would be grossly misleading to say that, though, without explaining the whole context. And I am sure the BBC would never wish to mislead anyone…
April 12th, 2007 at 6:14 pmOveroften, actually no I mis-typed there. I actually quite love the BBC’s programing. Sorry about that.
What I wanted to say was Although produced by the BBC, I was ’surprised’ at the point of view they took on the culture of sex in Japan.
April 12th, 2007 at 8:18 pmThe point of view conveyed in the video seems just as commonplace in the West, and no more accurate or sophisticated, than the stereotype it dismisses at the beginning.
April 12th, 2007 at 8:58 pmYeah, as with all stereotypes, there’s an element of truth in most of what’s being said in the video, but I’m currently 4 minutes in & already the bullocks level is off the meter. Next up: “in Japan, tentacle rape of schoolgirls is considered an innocent hobby.”
This is just made up theories by the BBC used as an excuse to show us tits.
Come on, if I was that desperate, I’d use the Internet.
… Umm …
April 12th, 2007 at 9:09 pmThey lost all credibility as soon as they insisted that “there is hardly any censorship” in a country where it is illegal to shows images of genitalia, regardless whether it is a mainstream Hollywood movie or a pornographic video.
If I didn’t know love hotels were real, I wouldn’t believe this report after such a blatant fabrication in the first few minutes.
April 12th, 2007 at 10:05 pm“Maybe the BBC crew spent their nights at sex establishments” …so thats where my Telly Tax money gets spent…this is outrageous!!.

April 13th, 2007 at 7:22 am“…usually at a sex oriented establishment…”
I disagree with you here, as the video stated “snack bar or sexual orientated place” - If you are not going to snack bars with your colleagues, thats because you’re not being invited and they are going after you leave…
April 13th, 2007 at 11:17 pmTo be fair, the vid said the night “often” includes a hostess bar or sexually oriented place. Often is not usually. But a hostess bar is not necessarily a sexually oriented place, either.
When I was living in London, I was constantly asked about sex in Japan. Far, far more than in the US. Make of that what you will.
