On the job
Crime is on the rise in Japan.
Drivers routinely ignore traffic regulations.
The escaped murderer of Lindsay Ann Hawker is still at large.
But rest assured, Nippon, for the boys in blue are on the job.
A teen has been apprehended for violating the Road Traffic Law for repeatedly riding double on a bicycle, police said.
Police apprehended the 15-year-old, whose name has been withheld because he is a minor, following an incident in Suwa over the weekend. Law enforcers said they had not heard of any cases of people being apprehended for riding double in the past 20 years.
Investigators accuse the 15-year-old of illegally riding double on a bicycle with a friend on a road in front of JR Kamisuwa Station’s west exit at about 2:15 p.m. on Saturday.
When a police officer tried to question the teen, he allegedly fled for about 300 meters before being apprehended.
The 15-year-old had been previously warned for riding double in Suwa on May 16, police said.
It mentions “riding double” something like four times in this article, but never once explains what it means.
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:56 pmDoes it mean carrying a mate on the back? I reckoned it might, but nowhere is a second person mentioned. Or is it something else? I’ve never heard this phrase before.
Who says Japan isn’t the safest country in the world?!!
May 22nd, 2007 at 9:57 pmOveroften, “riding double” is an American expression that means two people riding on the same bike.
And now that you mention it, it is strage that there is no mention of the other person. . .

May 23rd, 2007 at 12:14 amillegally riding double on a bicycle with a friend
I must be missing somthing, but I assumed “friend” to mean a different person – though one can never be certain in today’s otaku world.
Take away the bicycle, and “riding double” conjures up all kinds of tittilating images.
