Long live the King!
Hamburger lovers in Tokyo were happy to hear that Burger King, the second largest hamburger chain in the world, is back in Japan after a six-year hiatus.
“In Japan our customers’ minds have changed. Before, cheapest was the strength. Now, they like taste.”
The Japan franchise, run by South Korea’s Lotte Group and turnaround firm Revamp Corp., will initially push its “Whopper” menu, priced about 30 percent more than a Big Mac.U.S. menu items will increasingly be available from later this year to take advantage of demand for bigger burgers, as seen by strong sales of McDonald’s four-patty “Mega Mac”.
Though I have always preferred Burger King to McDonald’s and even Wendy’s, I thought that the shops they had operating in Japan the last time around were a bit dirty. Here’s hoping they get it right this time around.
Now that you mention it, they were a bit grungy. But, McDonalds wasn’t the sleek place it is today either.
Burger king has never had a coherent ideology or business culture that I have seen, and that might be its weak point? MosBuger is healthy, McDonald’s is Kroc’s vision, Wendy’s is the old guy with the family-style burgers, Lotteria is cheap. What is BK?
