Chiba city puts some teeth into recycling
06/22/2007 @ 12:00 am
An NPO named the the Japan Denture Recycling Association is collecting used dentures at the Kamagaya, Chiba municipal government headquarters in order to recycle their gold and silver.
They plan to donate the any money earned through the project to needy children.
The organization, which started the project in December last year, is also looking to install similar collection boxes at city halls across the country.
“By recycling dentures, we’d like to play a part in forming recycling-based society,” an association official said.
Please remind me not to get old.

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:08 amAmong materials to be recycled, there are good ones and not so good ones. Metals are good ones and at least two third of their volumes are being recycled. Especially gold and silver belong to valuable metals which are being recycled up to 90%, today.
Plastic products are a example of not so good ones. To recycle them into another plastic products, you often need more energy(petroleum) than making the same new plastic products from petroleum. I assume the best way to make use of plastic product recycle is to use them as fuel.
I find the federation of electric power companies of Japan calls plutonium usage of Mox fuel in atomic generation as “Recycle” is ridiculous.
Some “Earth friendly” phrases declared by companies or administrations look suspicious or nonsense as they are actually just “Less Earth harmful”. They say “We’d like to play a part in forming recycling-based society”, but the society is based on fossil fuels, is fundamentally unsustainable.

‘I had very good dentures once. Some magnificent gold work. It’s the only form of jewellery a man can wear that women fully appreciate.’ ~Graham Greene
