They’re changin’ it

Lovin itMcDonald’s Japan has announced some new marketing strategies, indicating the hamburger giant is intent on changing the way it does business here.

McPork
First is the launch of a new McPork burger made of U.S. pork. Scheduled to go on sale from July 23rd throughout Japan, the McPork burger flavored by a garlic and black pepper sauce, and will sell for 100 yen. The McPork burger will replace the McChicken burger, which will no longer be available in Japan.

McCoffee
McDonald’s Japan also announced that it will be opening a chain of 15 McCafe coffee shops in the Tokyo area from August 29th. The McCafe shops are an attempt by McDonald’s to secure a piece of Japan’s growing coffee market by offering drinks at prices that are lower than those of other shops.

The McCafe thing bears watching. Though people in the U.S. rate McDonald’s coffee higher than the brew you get at Starbucks, most Japanese people I have talked with tend to say they don’t like the taste of McDonald’s coffee.

Vittel, he was the former president of McDonald’s Japan, who failed in management with extreme low price strategy. He is already dead(Literally).

So… the McChicken burgers didn’t sell well?

No more McChickens? That’s a travesty, although those pork burgers sound good.

Japanese that I know like their coffee watered down with lots of milk and sugar. McDonald’s coffee tends to be strong and black (yeah, I know you can add in milk and sugar). Some US branches now offer their own variety of latte’s, etc. and some have started offering ice coffees as well. I wonder if this is all connected to the McCafe plan?

I also wonder if it will work since it won’t have the “luxury” cachet working for it that Starbucks does. Nobody really associates McD’s with luxury!
