Viagra Ice Cream and More

Who Sucks has presented a list of “101 Frightening Ice Cream Flavors from Around the World.” Almost all of them are Japanese, of course.
There have been detailed examinations before of, for example, disappearing Natto ice cream, and lists like the one that was in Mainichi Daily, but this is the most comprehensive yet.
“The Japanese have long taken pride in their ability to adopt, adapt and improve on customs, practices and styles from other countries. Having succeeded globally with cars, electronics and even fashion, it was only natural that the Japanese turned their hand to trying to surpass the West with one of its favorite culinary delights — ice cream.” Here are just a few prime examples:
- Salad Ice Cream.
- Ox Tongue Ice Cream.
- Sweet Potato Ice Cream.
- Fried Eggplant Ice Cream.
- Cactus Ice Cream.
- Nagoya Noodle Ice Cream.
- Chicken Wing Ice Cream.
- Wasabi Ice Cream.
- Pit Viper Ice Cream.
- Natural Viagra Ice Cream.
“Natural Viagra(Maka)” is a kind of medical plant in Peru, supposed to work as a tonic. This has nothing to do with Pfizer’s medicament.
Natto ice cream sounds strange if Natto is fermented, but should be Okay if natto is 甘納豆 Ama-natto(seat soybeans).
All the listed ice creams sound like diminishing your appetite. But before judging you got to taste them.

July 16th, 2007 at 9:15 amTofuUnion: Yes, you are (as always) right–in that article even as they list the various apparently disgusting ice creams, they often say it isn’t bad at all. Just SOUNDS bad. And the Japanese tastes are probably different too–any Green Tea ice cream or KitKat would be popular but here maybe we wouldn’t like it. And some of the flavors were failures–we have those over here too. I would try lots on that list before getting a “Pink Bubble Gum” or “Peanut Butter” ice cream here? Maybe not the raw horse flesh one though…
July 16th, 2007 at 9:33 amSweet soybeans please – “sweat” soybeans sounds even worse than Pocari Sweat…. 汗納豆….?
I’ve had Squid Ink ice cream several times, though it’s basically sesame-flavour with a dash of ink to darken it, if that.
July 16th, 2007 at 10:42 amYou can’t take all these disgusting ice creams as jokes.(Some maybe.) The farmers and fishers who are suffering under sluggish sales, are eager to promote their products with some novel foods. Recently I watched “Fish Cakes” on TV news. The commentators tasted and found them surprisingly very delicious.
Traditional Japanese taste is fishy, fermented one. But many young Japanese are too much adapted to western food(or western like Japanese cuisine). “Pink Bubble Gum” or “Peanut Butter” ice cream will be very popular in Japan. (I am addicted to peanuts and scared to hear the news that some Chinese peanuts were contaminated by vermicide.)
As for natto and raw fish or raw horse flesh, I know some westerners who love those foods. Especially my former German colleague would eat natto every day. He took natto to Germany and surprised some people with it. However, not all the Japanese like those foods.
