Check out this 30 cm tall basswood Gundam model from Bandai.

Each component is hand carved by a craftsman to fine detail, so production is limited and no two are exactly the same.
Price: 57,400 yen

I wonder what Gundam does in his off-duty time?..does he have any interests or hobbies?..ikebana,sports,carpentry,pachinko,cooking – or maybe even Haiku! possibly.

August 9th, 2007 at 10:35 amAlmost certainly carved by some Chinese guys working for a few dollars a day. They didn’t actually say it was carved by Japanese, did they? Not to denigrate Chinese woodcarvers, as many are excellent – and are certainly craftsmen. But, I would guess this could be done at this quality for well under 10,000 yen.
I think even the darumas and tanukis you see at country souvenir shops are all carved in China these days.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:38 amjust as an aside on Chinese craftsman (tradespeople) I watched an interview yesterday evening with some construction workers in Beijing, working on the Olympic Stadium.
They expressed the view that the work was just a another job and “okane desu-ka” (we’re only here for the money).
Leaving out all the hoopla and jingo-ism spewing out of the Party bubble machine..my sentiments really went out to those guys – they looked beaten down and cynical.
I never have had any beef with your average Chinese man-in-the-street.
It’s just the Party elite’s lining their pockets that makes me see Red.
(no pun intended)
rem.
