Children playing in a field in Shimanto, Kochi Prefecture have discovered a quartet of four gold frogs with red eyes.

The abnormal amphibians are believed to be extremely rare mutations of the black-spotted pond frog.
Local residents are hoping that the gold frogs are harbingers of good fortune.

a long time ago my wife bought me a small keyring charm (a gold frog) and in her usual way just said “Don’t lose it”.
“Frog has been loved as a luck bringer in Japan. Kaeru, Japanese name of frog has a same sound of “return”. Safety return from a trip, return of money and return of missing things, frog charm will bring you hapiness.”
*I never lost it – but sometimes I think she wish I had.*
