Legal Japanese soft pedo porn lands U.S. man in jail
A Florida man is facing up to 250 years in prison for possession of child pornography that included images of Japanese pedo cheesecake model Saaya Irie.
According to a Martin County Sheriff’s report, a deputy saw Downs’ blue Ford pickup illegally parked in a Jensen Beach construction zone with Downs sleeping inside. When the deputy searched the truck, he found marijuana and 51 CDs or DVDs with printed labels like “Asian girls in various stages of undress,” according to reports.
Many of the girls appeared younger than 12 and a receipt in the truck listed titles like Saaya Irie Legend 11 years old and Pretty Sexy Teens Series, according to reports.
Downs told a deputy he bought the pictures on the Internet, according to reports.
Publications containing photos of prebubescent models such as Irie are legal in Japan.

September 21st, 2007 at 9:03 amI’ve talked about this subject with some male friends before. I think people in Japan tend to see ” Child Porn ” as someone’s privacy or just a trivial thing. I understand that in Western it’s a kind of stigma of persons who are interested in child porn. I don’t know if that comes from the Christianity cultural background, or people are more aware of the human right about infants. But isn’t this case of 250 years in prison a violation of human right ?
It’s hard to judge why people(or men) in Japan are tolerant about child porn or pornography in general. You encounter often young girls are in bikinis or naked in magazines or on TV, etc. ( Maybe less nowadays, because some groups of feminists or PTA criticized about it.)
September 21st, 2007 at 9:59 amTofuUnion, 250 years is the sum of recommended sentences for whatever number of individual crimes Downs is being charged with. For example, the Florida law against possession of child pornography may define the crime as possessing a single pornographic image and recommend 5 years in prison for those found guilty, and the material in Downs’ possession is being counted as 50 separate violations of the law. 5 years x 50 violations = 250 years.
The law was likely not written with an awareness of broadband Internet. In any case, the actual sentence will not be set until the conclusion of Downs’ trial. 250 years is only the theoretical maximum. Downs is certainly a pervert in my book and deserves to be punished, but I agree that 250 years, effectively multiple life sentences, would be excessive.
The obsession of so many Japanese men have with prepubescent girls is social and moral poison. This goes for any material that makes girls into sexual objects and not just explicitly pornographic materials. While it is tempting to dismiss the problem with the argument, “What harm does looking at pictures do anyone?”, I think there definitely is harm done in the form of the attitudes towards women it engenders in the viewer and in society at large as more of these images diffuse into the media, and even moreso to those children who are exploited to create these images.
I favor heavy social and legal penalties for consumers of child pornography in the hope that it will curb demand, and ultimately reduce the number of children exploited to satisfy this vice.
September 21st, 2007 at 11:57 amI find it hard to believe that child porn is legal in Japan, if that’s what this article is suggesting. The info page on interpol site below seems to indicate otherwise. Though the age of consent is much lower that I expected.

September 21st, 2007 at 5:09 pmIt is half legal.
As far as I know you are not allowed to sell it, but you are allowed to buy it (or the other way around?)…
anyway, those pictures would be considered child pornography everywhere in Europe as well…
He will have fun in jail picking up the soap bars…

Please. Any negative attitudes toward women are brought on by women themselves.
September 23rd, 2007 at 3:22 ampapa : I don’t think the majority of Japanese men are obsessed with prepubescent girls’ pornography. Only some otakus who are called ” Lolicon ” are obsessed. As for Japanese otaku culture like Lolicon Porn or Hentai, it certainly contains some social and moral poison.
But before you understand this problem correctly you have to know the fact that Japanese crime rate is one of the lowest in advanced countries. Probably people in Japan generally don’t see child porn having much connection with child abuse, exploitation or rape. This might have something to do with the most Japanese men are not so masculine. I assume the main problem is NOT the obsession of child porn isn’t actually illegal, but the control over illegal production and sale of pedophilic porn isn’t well maintained in Japan.
And as Paul suggested this problem is not only caused by perverse men but also by some women (or low teenage girls) themselves.
September 23rd, 2007 at 9:07 pmPaul, you misogynistic fool. That ridiculous blanket assessment is like the idea that all men are rapists (clearly not true). Who could ever claim that 11-12 year old girls are the cause of their own abuse. Young girls will sometimes do foolish things when they are growing up, but it is the responsibility of adults not to abuse.
October 26th, 2007 at 1:11 amThe crime rate in Japan is indeed low. Are we talking about the same types of crime prevelant in the western world? Also the crime records are difficult to access in Japan, it seems they like to keep some things secret: like how many women and children are victims ofunreported crime perhaps?
