Crappy Food

Tokyomango spotted this restaurant sign advertising Super Unchi, Chinese-style Unchi, Japanese-style Unchi, and (for a change of pace) Healthy Pig. Apparently unchi = poop in Japanese. Hmmm… I can’t decide today whether to have the Chinese-style or the Japanese-style? Or maybe a Super! However, one of their readers commented:
Seems this is a Chinese restaurant that’s trying very hard to look Japanese — and failing miserably. They wanted to say “lunch”: ra-n-chi, but used similar-looking but wrong characters that instead spell out u-n-chi. It would be a supreme irony if their food actually tasted like crap, wouldn’t you say?
Yep, that reader was me - here in Canada we see a lot of Chinese-made foods & goods that try to pass as Japanese but get bogged down in the writing. Maybe it’s that devilish combo of Kanji, hiragana and katakana that makes Japanese so tough to fake. The hiragana “u” and the katakana “ra” are fairly similar yet the result of mixing them up can be fairly hilarious, ne?

Others as 元氣お豚 ( Mr. Fit Pig ??? ), 超級金猪食材 ( Super Gold Wild Boar Food ??? ) and お弁當 ( Lunch BBox ??? ) also read very funny.
They should be 新鮮豚 , 高級猪食材 and お弁当 in correct Japanese.
