If that doesn’t get you on the wrong (right?) side of their firewall, nothing will.
I used to drive past their local single shot dispatch center. It was quite a modern and clean looking building. Like a small recycling center, if I may say so.
that is really funny, if it weren’t true. leave it up to people with imagination to sock it to China. If only a Chinese Gorbachev would come along and rescue that amazing country….. maybe after the Olympics, he will surface. I heard a name already mentioned for the Chinese Gorby: Mr Li Keqiang. Google him and see. He is 52 and with it. Then again, he’s a member. Of the Party.

Of course, Gorbachev was also a member. Such momentous change can only happen from the inside. Hope you’re right. I did in fact Google him. At the very least, he seems to have a bit of the Midas touch in terms of his ability to perform economic wonders.
So what if they lead the world in executions, with sentences often carried out immediately after judgement is announced?
Who cares if they continue to flood Tibet with Chinese immigrants, to the point where Lhasa is on the verge of becoming a “Chinese” as opposed to a “Tibetan” city, while at the same time issuing new regulations that in effect put the selection of the next Dalai Lama in the hands of Chinese bureaucrats?
It’s none of our business that military spending has gone up by double digits every year for nearly 20 years, or that there are 900 missiles pointed at Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy that has never been under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party, yet is claimed to be a part of China, and is threatened with destruction by Beijing on an almost daily basis.
We should stop bashing China over such trivial matters as suppression of human rights, environmental degradation, and support for murderous regimes in other countries, not to mention food and prodcut safety.
Like vittel suggests, just as with Berlin in 1936 and Moscow in 1980, we shouldn’t mix politics with sports.
No, Vittel is right. Chinese police state, American democracy - all the same thing. Like North Korea and Japan, or Mars and Earth. All the same. Both are round, you know.
Classic.

October 2nd, 2007 at 2:01 pmThe cartoon is funny, yeah.
But I dislike the constant bashing about China, especially here in France. Some want to boycott the Olympics!
Give them a break, dammit.
As if the US doesn’t execute its people.
