Erika bites the hand that feeds
You would imagine that an aspiring Japanese actress would realise how fraught with danger the journey to the top is, how fragile a career in the public eye is, and would do all she can to protect herself.
21-year-old Erika Sawajiri’s star has risen at light-speed recently and she’s probably currently regarded as one of Japan’s hottest young talents (despite the fact that, in my humble opinion, her acting is really rather hammy and clumsy).
Her next big appearance will be in the forthcoming movie Closed Note, alongside Yuko Takeuchi. The cast gave a press conference the other day…
Goodness. Any half-decent actress would have been able to hide that bad mood, surely? Or has she just decided to stop being nice? From the sullen expression, to the angrily folded arms, the rolling eyes and the rudely curt responses to the journo’s friendly questions, it seems Erika-sama (for real!) wasn’t having a jolly day.
Is Sawajiri actively attempting to sabotage her own career? I dare say that getting on the wrong side of the media and throwing a very public strop is a great way of going about it.
Or is she just surrounded by sycophants and is starting to believe the hype?
Whatever it is, this open display of petulance hasn’t gone down well. I wonder what form the fallout will take.
Talk about being on the. . . ummm. . . in a bad mood!
Of course, Erika is the gal in the Meiji Fran commercial we wrote about the other day.
October 1st, 2007 at 6:44 pmDamn! Pretty arrogant girl. Clearly that time of the month again eh?
October 1st, 2007 at 7:45 pmI think when your that age, there’s a lot of stuff you don’t give a toss about.
October 1st, 2007 at 10:11 pm…like manners.
October 1st, 2007 at 10:31 pmWhile she’s pretty enough, it won’t be any great loss to the entertainment industry if she were to quickly fade away. Her handlers/agency must have been scrambling after that press conference though. The use of sama really irks….
October 1st, 2007 at 10:37 pm@riki: True that, still my parents taught me some manners, even for that age.
Haven’t seen any of her movies, so can’t judge her performance.
October 1st, 2007 at 11:01 pmErika Sawajiri apologized about all her bad manners at the press conference in her blog. At least it seemed she didn’t intended to make bad mood. We can’t judge what she had.
Lately some female magazine paparach took pictures of Sawajiri and her 43 year old boy friend Tsuyoshi Takashiro (a producer). She had been stormed by many interviewers. I assume she was very displeased with it or just collapsed of exhaustion after many works.
Anyway she had to recognize ” pretty ain’t enough “. As for her performance in movies or dramas, she certainly owes it a lot to her appearance.
October 2nd, 2007 at 5:33 pmWell she has “bad manners”, but I found her awesome in the role of the Korean high school student in the movie “Pacchigi”.
Definitly not just a “beauty”, but also a talented actress IMHO.

October 3rd, 2007 at 4:03 amNothing to do with bad manner.
Some people must have done something quite nasty to her.
At her age, I would have behaved the same way if I had been treated like shit by someone.
For some people, it’s very difficult to smile when they’re very very angry.
Even if you’re an actress.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:15 amFor the money she makes, you could stick a hot poker up my butt, and I could smile. And there are a thousand other beautiful and talented 21 year olds waiting to replace her who can do the same.
Which is the point. She’s making major money. If she wants to pout and be rude to working people when she’s sad, then she can work at a gas station. Maybe.
Tell me why you don’t feel sorry for the poor woman asking the questions and being snubbed in public.
October 3rd, 2007 at 10:44 pm“Which is the point. She’s making major money. If she wants to pout and be rude to working people when she’s sad, then she can work at a gas station. Maybe.”
Fact is: you don’t know the real reason behind her behaviour.
Maybe she discovered something wrong in her contract … who knows.
“Tell me why you don’t feel sorry for the poor woman asking the questions and being snubbed in public.”
I don’t feel sorry because her silly questions (always the same silly questions) made me cringe and I find the way she talked very irritating.
And it’s very refreshing to see a Japanese that doesn’t get along with the crowd.
I say thumbs up to her.
I believe that there must be a major reason for a japanese person to behave like that in front of so many people.
October 4th, 2007 at 4:33 amshe’s CRYING
the original video is down, but consider:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh4IWyYYVZs
check at 1:09. You see the stream of tears on her right cheek (your left) and underneath her nose is moist.
She wasn’t being flippant IMO. She was upset and hurt.
October 4th, 2007 at 9:50 amThat’s not tears. Watch the rest of the video and others, and it’s very clearly glittery make-up.
October 4th, 2007 at 9:56 amAnd yes, the original video was pulled, so I’ve edited the post with a new video.
October 4th, 2007 at 10:01 amWhy am I not surprised that vittel is so staunchly defending the right of a person to be rude and obnoxious?
October 4th, 2007 at 12:41 pmWhy am I not surprised that diamondback is so keen on judging people so hastily without knowing a few important facts?
Do you live in a world where people are either all black or all white?
October 4th, 2007 at 6:13 pmMore like reptile or mammal.
October 4th, 2007 at 10:52 pmwell there are other categories you know – some creatures like squids or dare I say the word..octopi..seem to fall a little outside of most major classifications.

the trouble these days is that everybody wants to slap a label on things.
(also, vittel can be little rude and lewd at times, but never outright crude, and certainly not obnoxious!)
…remember those ero-moneyboxes vittel? sheer inspiration!!
rem.
October 5th, 2007 at 10:56 amjust in case you didn’t bother to read that link on my last comment – apparently an octopus has three hearts and can easily regrow any tentacles that might accidently snap off…now that-is-clever!!.
*sheesh! nature is mind boggling.*
October 5th, 2007 at 11:57 amand I think that this is pretty much the definitive/ standard text on our horny little octopod pals.
http://www.sff.net/people/lucy-snyder/brain/2005/10/octopus.html
*skip to the Anatomy Section*
and the next time that you are chewing on some Calamari Mediterraneo and reflecting on life, the universe, and the cost of heating oil…just remember the little octopuss…wow! he snaps his third tentacle and poof! he grows a brand new one.
(If only..if only..i could be so lucky.)
