Japanese blogging is very popular

According to this Washington Post article Japanese people are blogging like crazy these days. According to the article 37% of all blog posts last year were written in Japanese, beating out English language posts by 1%.

It should come as no surprise that one of the popular items that people are writing about is food.

Consider, for example, the remarkably harmonious blog that Junko Kenetsuna has been writing five times a week for the past three years about her midday meal.

With understated precision, she calls her blog “I had my lunch.”

In a recent dispatch from a Vietnamese restaurant in Tokyo, Kenetsuna wrote: “The soup has a distinctive chicken flavor and the bitterness of pear, which gives you much sensation in your mouth.”

The article also notes that Japanese blogs rarely bash other people or organizations and are generally more polite.

There’s also a video to go along with the article.

They must be kidding!
I know by experience how aggressive Japanese forums can be. I don’t see why blogs should be different.

I even remember the real story of a J-blogger who had the habit to post pics of her daughter on her blog.

The J-crowd virtually lynched her with aggressive comments.

The article must have been written by a gaijin who still thinks that Japan is lalaland.

Shari Said:

Most Japanese blogs aren’t aggressive because many are relatively bland, diary-style affairs which write about trivial matters.

As Vittel notes though, forums are another issue entirely. There are serious issues of on-line bullying, often involving a group of people anonymously slandering someone and using that person’s real name. This has resulted in suicides and court cases.

The reason blogs aren’t so daring is that it’s a bit harder to both talk about your daily life and attack people safely behind the veil of anonymity. It’s harder to hide who you are in a place where you consistently reveal yourself, so the attacks are reserved for bulletin boards and forums.

Shari, don’t forget that there is a “comment” section in most of blogs. Thus, online bullying remains possible.

Yeah, as vittel and Shari suggest there are apparently two different types of blogs in Japan. One is to aim criticizing on society or specific people. With this one bloggers can be aggressive. The other one is to aim sharing basically the same interests, ideas or feelings with which bloggers are quite polite to each others. I have seen both types.

vittel Said:

Yeah but my little story above happened on the latter type of blogs!

BTW, I feel like I want to start some bullying here … ;)
