Something new to worry about. . . Low cholesterol!

New research coming out of Japan seems to indicate that people with very low cholesterol are at increased risk of developing stomach cancer.
A study that followed 2,600 residents of a Japanese town for 14 years revealed that after accounting for age and gender, stomach cancer rates rose significantly with descending cholesterol levels.
For example, among subjects with the highest cholesterol levels, the gastric cancer rate was the equivalent of 2.1 cases per 1000 persons per year; among those with the lowest cholesterol, the rate was 3.9 per 1000 person-years.
Reasearchers concluded that people with low cholesterol should undergo regular checkups for gastric cancer.
I’ve heard this before – low cholesterol runs on my dad’s side of the family (I have it as well), and my Dad used to boast about it until the doctor started getting paranoid about getting us all screened for stomach cancer.

While we hear a lot about it being desirable to keep cholesterol levels low, as high cholesterol could be the cause of heart attack or stroke. However, it’s good to know that very low cholesterol levels may be just as unhealthy as very high cholesterol levels.
Unfortunately the dangers of low cholesterol have been less well publicized. There are a number of health books that have entries on how to prevent high cholesterol, but almost none with entries on how to prevent or treat abnormally low cholesterol.
According to some web page on low cholesterol stuff, abnormally low levels of cholesterol may indicate :
1. hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid gland
2. liver disease
3. malabsorption
4. malnutrition
5. inadequate absorption of nutrients from the intestines
Manganese deficiency has also been linked to low cholesterol levels (or hypocholesterolemia).
