Suntan Apples

I love suntan apples.
Actually, all I ever manage to do is to photograph them. I never end up shelling out the money to actually buy one. And I would have difficulty eating them. But I think they are pretty cool.

Here are some fancy ones that I think were designed for a wedding gift–tortoise and crane and all. I guess if someone gave these to you, you’d have to eat them.
It’s very first time for me to see them. It reads 寿 ( which means congratulation ) on the apples. And then crane and tortoise. We say in Japanese, crane lives 1,000 years and tortoise lives 10,000 years.
March 6th, 2008 at 8:46 pmI first saw them in the north where the apples are raised. But I seem to remember seeing some in Tokyo as well. I have more photos but was struggling with the image load function, so this is all I could put up.
March 6th, 2008 at 11:52 pmHow much do these cost?
March 7th, 2008 at 1:24 amThey are very pretty…
You know, I don’t know. After I posted last time, I remembered that the first apples I ever saw were in Takayama. But it seems that they get more elaborate the practice more widespread over time.

March 8th, 2008 at 3:10 pmAfter I had seen how to make“ Suntan Apples “, I scanned about the average price of Fuji Apples.
Suntan Apples (Fuji) : 2800 Yen / 5 Kilos
Ordinary Fuji Apples : 2600 Yen / 5 Kilos
So, you cannot say Suntan Apples are expensive.

March 9th, 2008 at 12:40 amWoops, I made a mistake !
Suntan Apples (Fuji) were 2800 Yen / 3 Kilos(Not 5 Kilos) = 11 Apples.
That makes, one Suntan Apple costs 255 Yen (about 2.50 US Dollar or 1.60 Euro). That’s not cheap.
