Happy or Sad?

Quick, what’s the expression of the guy in this picture?
Your response–and whether or not you took into account the feelings of the people behind him–may be a reflection of your culture. I wrote earlier about the neurological test that has recently been conducted, testing East Asian and American patients and their ability to make relative and absolute judgments. Here’s another test, utilizing the picture above.
When asked how the foregrounded person — their face manipulated to look happy, angry or sad — appeared to feel, nearly three-quarters of 36 Japanese test subjects said their perception was influenced by the emotions of the background figures.
By contrast, nearly three-quarters of 39 North American participants said the people in the background didn’t affect them at all.
When the researchers tracked the viewers’ eye movements, they found that Japanese gazes flitted quickly to the background, while North Americans fixated on the central subject.
My first reaction was that the guy looked determined, and appeared to have a group of friendly followers. Only later did I think of the picture in terms of happy or sad.
What about you?
Well either the Asians had an IQ lower than 25 or they misunderstood the question. It clearly says: “what’s the expression of the guy in this picture?” It doesn’t say the people in the background. So yeah you can say he looks angry!!
But then again, I always have a angryish look on my face while I’m not even angry. Same could be implied here.
Damn I would so own at neurological class!!
March 11th, 2008 at 9:08 pmHe looks downright angry to me.
March 11th, 2008 at 9:38 pmLike Papi mentioned, I’d be tempted to tell people to “answer the question asked”.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:33 pmConstipated.
My response was angry.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:56 pmAngry.
March 12th, 2008 at 4:55 amYeah, if you look just at the guy, he looks angry. I looked at the photo before I read the question and thought it looked like they had all shown up to do an intervention. Hence the mad/smiling group dynamic. Anyway, that wasn’t the question.
March 12th, 2008 at 1:21 pmHahaha…an intervention! Good one!
I thought: religious freaks/cult members/pod people in the background (hence the vacant expressions) that are trying to convert a thinking person to their brand of escapism.
And he’s pissed because his mom joined and gave away her fortune to the group.
March 12th, 2008 at 2:00 pmWell, I’m from Costa Rica, and I thought this guy looked angry as soon as I saw him! Now… what should I do?
March 12th, 2008 at 9:45 pmI saw the post title, “Happy or Sad?”, and then the picture. I immediately thought, “That guy obviously looks mad. Is there a trick?” So I looked at everyone else, saw that they looked happy, and then looked back at the mad guy to see if he might look happy if it weren’t for the people around him looking the way they did. I thought maybe I had seen the others peripherally and created a contrast in my head.
But no…I’m pretty sure he’s mad.
(He doesn’t particularly look sad, and he certainly doesn’t look happy!)
March 12th, 2008 at 9:54 pmIt looks like I’ve said something positive for everyone, but just that one guy at the front didn’t like it.
