Real Natto
04/24/2008 @ 12:00 am

Knowing how I love natto, friends arranged for me to eat the real thing.
It comes wrapped in straw, like this. Open up the straw bundle (which is held together by a piece of string I didn’t photograph, so intent was I on unpuzzling the package) and out pops a dollop of natto.
It was really, really good and lacked the smell that some find so offensive from packaged natto.

That looks disgusting. Mind you Natto and Cottage Cheese is quite nice.
April 24th, 2008 at 12:57 amI’ve tried natto in both pre-packaged and ’straw bundle’ forms. It tasted like … ‘chemicals’ is the best way I can describe it. It tasted like the smell of Pine-Sol.
I still want to try it with hot dogs, though.
April 24th, 2008 at 12:59 amWow. Y’all are creative.
I’m telling you, though. Natto ice cream is still the way to go.

Cool, riki. . . I thought I was the only fan of natto and cottage cheese, which I like to spread on toast as I commented on here.
April 24th, 2008 at 1:25 amI love natto but never had a chance to try the “straw bundle” form. I don’t think you can find some of this down here in Brazil.
Do anyone else eat it mixed with raw eggs on top of gohan in a bowl?
April 24th, 2008 at 4:10 amA friend got this for me and I do seem to recall he said it came from Ibaraki-ken. I’ve never eaten natto with egg. Wow. The toast thing sounds interesting. First soba sandwiches, and now natto on toast . . .
April 24th, 2008 at 4:51 amI’ve tried natto in almost every way, shape and form and yet, to my own embarassment, haven’t yet had the pleasure of the original.
April 24th, 2008 at 8:18 amNatto is great with eggs, mixed in curry and on top of Hiroshima okonomiyaki. I second natto on toast. Yum!
Wow, cool. Hadn’t seen it in its natural state before.

Yeah we have a natto restaurant in Fukuoka. Someone told me it’s the only one in Japan. Not sure if that’s true or not. Anyway that’s one of the dishes they served natto and cottage cheese salad. It was quite good. I was pretty drunk before I got there, so don’t remember much else
April 24th, 2008 at 3:55 pmI’m thinking that I’ve got to try natto on a bagel.
