One Response to “medical anatomy textbook from 19th century japan”

Anatomy pictures are horrifying for those who are less familiar with cold eyes of observing things. I think this medical anatomy text book in Edo period has quite high standard of observation accuracy.
Also it reminds me of famous ” 9 pictures of postmortem changes ” called 九相詩絵巻 Kusoushi Emaki of 13th century Japan.
” In the beginning a princess is sitting in drawing room. And… she dies. After a while, her body swells and the skin discolors, eyes get out, the body decomposes and will be eaten by stray dogs and crows. At the end, the body turns into bones.” It’s kind of ultimate realism which shows what you are made of.
