Murakami’s “My Lonesome Cowboy” sells for $15M

Takashi Murakami’s life sized hentai action figure has sold for $15,161,000 according to Sotheby’s website.
The piece of part of his show currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum. I went to see it a couple of weeks ago and it’s a really fun show.
A picture of the piece is below (NSFW):

Seriously, someone has too much money if they spent $15 million on a cartoon guy playing with his spunk.

May 19th, 2008 at 7:32 pmYeah, I have to agree it’s a waste. Think, for example, of the Unkei Buddha at Christie’s which went for around the same price–that just has to be worth more.

May 20th, 2008 at 12:20 amSecond thought: He had at least $15 million… maybe he knows something I don’t!
You never know. Hew may turn around and sell it for 20 million. If you look at art auctions, you can buy works from the old masters for much cheaper than many popular current works. It may be that there’s less personal connection felt with the older works. Flying spunk is something half the world’s population can identify with.
Still, I would stick with the older, cheaper stuff…
May 20th, 2008 at 7:18 amyeah, I actually saw Murakami’s show this past Saturday. The cowboy and his lasso of seamen was placed directly across from a slightly less revealing hentai female. Not to be out done, in true hentai fashion, the green haired vixen sprouted a hula-hoop of breast lactation around her body…not kidding.
I normally wouldn’t have any problems with the “ahhhhtwork” but there were TONS OF LITTLE KIDS RUNNING AROUND.

May 20th, 2008 at 2:53 pmI agree with one previous comment , mankind can relate to the wonderful sculpture. I admire Mr. Murakami for his artistic talent and his insight with respect to the erotic nature of men and women. I believe that most people that criticize the sculpture are in denial of their true nature and their base sexual needs. The most mentally stable men and women, that have not fallen into the trap that religious dogma has fashioned about sexuality, are the ones that can bring enlightenment to the world. Sexuality is the most beautiful gift to man whether it be from a god or the universal laws. I say embrace it and enjoy it to its fullest. Sexuality nourishes the mind the body and the soul.
January 11th, 2010 at 7:55 amI do agree that sexuality is a beautiful thing, but the problem is that this figure is based on a hentai character. There is a difference between art– which can praise and beautify the act of copulation– and pornography (which is meant for stimulation). The fact that someone paid such a large sum of money for one depiction of a so-called stimulating act is a bit embarrassing for the entire human race..
March 18th, 2010 at 1:51 pmBy your definition, you’re basically saying sexuality is a beautiful thing as long as it fits within your scope of understanding and that’s just an old fashioned idea which contributes nothing to this discussion. It’s just embarassing for some because of cultural biases and nothing more. The line between art and pornography is quite subjective and it has been always changing. What you are witnessing is a change in the way people are seeing things. Sorry but that’s true. The people with money have always decided what the world would consider as art. $15m says that this is definitely art.
You can relate this to past controversial artwork by very famous artists. Picasso’s les demoiselles or Manet’s Luncheon on the grass were considered pornography because of the cultural biases of their times. You can disagree all you want but the world has already spoken and you’re just getting left behind.
