Chinese foot binding

We all have heard of how foot binding was (and apparently still is in some areas) practiced in China, but these are the first photos I have ever seen of this gruesome practice.

July 19th, 2008 at 6:31 amUgh, just horrible. Immobilizing females by some gruesome disfigurement to the feet/legs. One of the worst aspects of any culture. It don’t care whats socially or religiously acceptable, thats totally inhumane.
Good post though. Lets us know that these things still exist to protest.

July 19th, 2008 at 10:20 pmThis makes me wonder if she has any sense of feeling in her feet or if they are completely numb…
Also, this puts things in perspective. I won’t be complaining anymore after sitting Indian style for a little too long while sitting at a Japanese table.

February 7th, 2009 at 1:11 amNot all Chinese engaged in that horrible practice. The Hakka women were derided for not binding their feet, and were called “Big Feet Hakka Women.” There was a practical reason for doing so. While the Hakka men toiled in the fields, the Hakka women would stand guard with arms, alert the men folk if there was an attack, and the men would join in the defending. So who was really forward thinking?

February 10th, 2010 at 7:41 amIs there anyone on this website capable of an intelligent response? You all sound like a bunch of clueless 10 year old girls.
February 11th, 2010 at 5:34 pmThat happened for a thousand years in China, and it is believed that it happened because of a birth defect suffered naturally by a princess. In a follow-the-leader culture like China, that became fashion. Thankfully, they have, for the most part, grown out of it.
