What the heck is wrong with Japanese people? They made a pizza with hot dogs in the crust.

You can get similar things in Britain - crusts stuffed with cheese and bacon, and such. Looks delicious to me.

August 2nd, 2008 at 12:37 pmThe statement “What the heck is wrong with Japanese people?” strikes me as Orientalist at best, racist at worst. It would be more appropriate to ask, “What the heck is wrong with Pizza Hut, a wholly owned subsidiary of Yum! Brands Inc.?”
There are better ways ways to express astonishment at wacky Japanese products without making sweeping generalizations about a whole race of people.
August 2nd, 2008 at 12:45 pmWell if it’s sweeping generalisations - why the heck do so many Americans spend so much time complaining about something a tiny bit outside their sphere of experience on Japanese pizzas?
August 2nd, 2008 at 1:10 pmThere. I’ve said it. Bring it on.
Orientalist? Racist?
Sounds pizzaist to me.
August 2nd, 2008 at 1:30 pmCould be worse, imagine eating a hot dog pizza in China
August 2nd, 2008 at 1:33 pmSounds like a Japanese marketing award. “And the 2008 Best Pizzaist, embodying the sauciness and tang, is…”
August 2nd, 2008 at 1:34 pmTo answer the original question, they simply live too long. And it’s crippling the economy. So the food industry is doing its bit to lower Japanese life expectancy to a more affordable level. Kids brought up on this ain’t gonna be draining the health service’s resources at the age of 110.
August 2nd, 2008 at 2:21 pmHot dog pizza in China. . . With real dog. . .
August 2nd, 2008 at 3:13 pmTwo things:
-That’s an old flyer (last summer I believe), and I don’t know if those hot dog or cheesy roll-crusts are still available. Recently they offered a “Versailles Crust” which included entire full-length hot dogs woven into the crust, but that too has ended.
-Racist or not, your statement is ridiculous to me because I’ve eaten that pizza. The exact one which is pictured. And it was goddamn delicious. Don’t knock it, or its creators, until you try it.
August 2nd, 2008 at 4:13 pmI have very rarely sent food back..but my damned mother-in-law insisted on eating at this horrid archi-porn quasi-Italianate pizza palace out in the “real” beyond-the-beyond boonies of Gunma..
I paid (I repeat) I paid!! as a gentleman does, but as we left I shouted some rather terse comments in rural Sicilian and gave them the accompanying Evil Eye hand sign.
Q: what the frott is a Chicago Pizza?

August 3rd, 2008 at 12:44 pmAh, Japanese pizza, good ol’ standby for gaijin to express the zaniness and silliness of the Japanese. One day I hope that such people will realize that they are not the target market for this, or corn/mayo on pizza, and thus stop laughing about it. That, or realize that maybe leaving home wasn’t really such a good idea.
August 4th, 2008 at 2:22 amLife is serious, folks. No laughing allowed. . .Hah!
August 4th, 2008 at 1:43 pmAs an American, I have to agree - most Americans are ridiculously conservative when it comes to food.
This all goes back to the “Japanese aren’t creative” stereotype. And when they are creative, it becomes “the Japanese are weird/crazy/zany.” Can’t win.
Aside from that, I wonder how this squares with the typical more expensive pizza in Japan - such an expression of minimalism that I feel lucky that they even have a crust. Seems there are 2 distinct markets for pizza in Japan.
August 4th, 2008 at 3:57 pmGood point, Ghoti, about the expensive minimalist pizza.
