Fashion In Japan

The combination of a slow news day and other real-world concerns it making it hard to post today, so here is BBC a report that though a bit dated, provides a pretty good idea of young woman fashion in Japan that is still pretty applicable today.

Although interesting in its look on fashion, I have to say that whoever wrote the script seems totally unable to use anything but well chewed cliches in describing Japan. Sometimes I wonder if videos like these are very helpful. After spending some of my high school years abroad attending Japanese high school, I learned that the too intense fascination with style, and many other materialistic distractions were seriously sucking away so many women from going into jobs more commonly reserved for men. There being such a strong female targeted materialistic culture, there are few if any ifluences that were out there that seemed to encourage girls in my high school to aspire to many things else than looking forward to going shopping.

I find it really sad that so much of the material culture has become so mainstream. I respect that Japan does have a true genius in all things clothing related, but I worry about how intense it is when reflected in its society; particularly when talking about the many girls who were my classmates. I only had a few friends who seemed to find all of the crazyness about being shopping fiends and only aspiring to go into the beauty industry as being limmiting to their own potentials.
