I’ve written a series of articles about the time I spent in Japan. I hope you enjoy both these and my further contributions to JAPUNDIT.

Hey coriolinus,
I read through all of your blogs and have found myself that much more interested in visiting(if not moving to) Japan. Thank you for sharing your experiences as each experience I come across from others certainly helps in preparation and expectation while in the country. Your expression of being a teacher has helped me understand better what to expect if I take that route. I am a graphic designer currently in a great job as a web designer and would hope to continue my career as such in Japan, given the opportunity. I hear often and gather the best way to initially enter the country for an extended period of time is through English teaching. Then, attempt to find a graphic design position for after my first year. Any thoughts or suggestions on this path?
-James
PS: I hope you’re current interest in flight has taken off.
September 1st, 2008 at 7:50 amHi coriolinus, welcome to Japundit. Hope you’ll be able to post more stuff than I did until now heh
September 1st, 2008 at 11:55 amGreat blog coriolinus, I’ve been reading some of your non-Japan related articles as well.
September 1st, 2008 at 12:27 pmThank you for your positive comments! I certainly hope to be able to continue to contribute here.
@JSharp If you want to progress in your web designer career in Japan, I’d recommend making your applications from your current location without getting the position as a teacher first. You describe your job as great; you’re probably making more money and enjoying the work more than you would as a teacher. It’s true that the easiest way to get to Japan is by teaching, but I am no longer sure it is the best way.
September 1st, 2008 at 12:58 pmOh I just noticed coriolinus that you have a BS in CS, which is what I’ll be majoring in as well. I’m considering JET but don’t know if teaching will be my thing. Do you think there’s jobs in IT related fields for foreigners (I’m hoping I can pass the JLPT 2kyuu eventually)?
September 1st, 2008 at 1:08 pmThere are plenty of jobs available in IT related fields in Japan, if you are bilingual.
September 1st, 2008 at 4:49 pmI often forget that I live in Japan. I spend so much time online. I’ll walk outside and go “aah Japan!!!!”
September 1st, 2008 at 6:44 pm@sputnik There are jobs outside of teaching English, but if you want them, you’ll need to get that 2kyuu before it’s worth even attempting to apply. A recent CS graduate has prospects in Japan at least as good as in America–provided they speak the language. Without that, you’d need several good years of industry experience to prove that you’re worth the effort of interpretation.
